There are four basic layers of lighting: General lighting, also called ambient, accent lighting, task lighting, and decorative lighting. Measured in footcandles, the IESNA has illuminance level recommendations based on the type of lighting, the type of space, the type of people, and how the lighting will be used (Page 14).
