7 Volunteer WorkVolunteering to help others can be one of the best ways to promote Empathy . However, volunteeropportunities for children under 5 can be hard to find. You may have to invent your own opportunities, butyou might also be surprised if you start asking around the course, first and foremost, you must avoid putting children in harm s way. Rather than trying toorganize a class volunteer project, you can simply develop a realistic list of possible activities for parentsto do with their children. A young child can gain a lot by helping pack boxes at the food bank, stuffingenvelopes for a fundraiser, or wrapping Christmas presents for orphans. Little activities like this can do alot to increase a child s awareness of Other people s situations.

8 He might never see the children who getthose presents, but if you explain to him that some children won t get presents this year unless we dothis, you may be surprised by how willing and eager that child is to help. Research shows that the morechildren engage in volunteer work, the more readily they seek out and volunteer for new projects in thefuture. Maybe it has something to do with that warm glow effect . 7 of 7
