We re committed to integrating experiential and community-based projects into our curricula, ensuring students across Faculties have the opportunity to work on projects with industry clients or community partners that help them put into practice their classroom learning and collaborate with their peers to address an external partner s challenge. This annual report contains stories from across our Faculties and Research Centres describing the amazing work our professors and research experts do to integrate strong experiential learning components for the students that lead to innovative solutions to real-world Mary Preece President and Vice ChancellorAt Sheridan , purposeful creativity is a key part of our mission.
2 We look for opportunities to put creativity to work, and to give our students opportunities to collaborate with external partners, professors and peers in other disciplines as part of problem-solving teams. From our externally-funded undergraduate research to SRCA Growth Grant projects and curriculum-based activities, interdisciplinary collaboration is one of the hallmarks of Sheridan research excellence. This report includes a diverse range of projects that involved illustration and engineering, mindfulness and adult colouring, virtual reality and social innovation, to name just a few. I hope you ll enjoy exploring how scholarship, research and creative activities have taken shape at Sheridan in the 2016-17 fiscal Janet Morrison Provost and Vice President, AcademicThis is an exciting time for undergraduate research at Sheridan .
3 Through our commitment to scholarship, research, and creative activities (SRCA), we provide great experiential learning for our students, growth opportunities for our professors, and valuable insight and problem-solving for the communities we serve. As the number of professors and students involved in SRCA has grown within our Faculties, so has the range of our activities and the value we deliver to our communities. This fiscal year, we received close to $8 million in external funding, and engaged over 2,000 students in a record 340 partnerships and collaborations with community and industry. Guided by our Academic Plan, we re working to further integrate applied research across our curricula and create truly one-of-a-kind learning experiences for Sheridan Jervis, Associate Vice President, SRCAThe Come From Away benefit concert in Gander, Newfoundland in October 2016.

5 088 Total number of professors and staff involved in research116 UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FUNDING AND METRICSOur five Research Centres CENTRE FOR ADVANCED MANUFACTURING AND DESIGN TECHNOLOGIESCENTRE FOR ELDER RESEARCHSCREEN INDUSTRIES RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTRECANADIAN MUSIC THEATRE PROJECTCENTRE FOR MOBILE INNOVATION35 Research awards Pat Spadafora, Director of the Centre for Elder Research, is a collaborator on a social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada Community and College social Innovation Fund grant awarded to Bow Valley College in Calgary. The goal of the project is to develop strategies to enhance the well-being, social and civic engagement of immigrant women Manju Sunil Varghese and Daniel Liao (Faculty of Applied Science and Technology [FAST]) receive the first applied research grant for Sheridan s School of Applied Chemical and Environmental sciences from the Natural sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
6 Their project will evaluate partner Drystill Holding Inc. s Pass-Through Distillation process, which could lead to more efficient production of bioethanol as a renewable fuel. EventsThe Faculty of Humanities and social sciences hosts its second Research Community Caf at the Davis Campus, in partnership with the Region of Peel. Sheridan researchers from across the College and Peel community-based organizations share their social innovation work and discuss Early Childhood Leadership students present the findings of their research at the fourth annual Honours Bachelor of Early Childhood Leadership Research Symposium. In many cases, their research work is completed as a result of past placement/internships, or other partnerships built through the degree program.
7 Woven stories mural puts experiential design to workSheridan unveils Woven Stories, a colourful, two-storey public art mural, on the western fa ade of the Rob Turner Building at the Davis Campus in Brampton. The project is Sheridan s first large-scale foray into experiential design. An interdisciplinary team of six illustration and industrial design students from the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design (FAAD) and an electromechanical engineering technology co-op student from FAST worked closely with PLANT Architect to design the window mural from vinyl applications and blinds. The mural tackles the long-standing challenge of glare and heat build-up in the adjacent stairwell and social space. The project team was mentored by professors from FAAD, FAST and the Office for Sustainability.
8 APRIL 20164 | 2016/17 Annual Report It s a powerful thing when you can create a studio in which industry experts incubate young talent and students get to feel the pride of knowing that they re creating a legacy piece that benefits the community. 9 JUNE The Italian Contemporary Film Festival Industry Day returns to the Screen Industries Research and Training Centre for a day of work-shops, panels and a technology showcase exploring virtual Farzad Rayegani, Director of the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Design Technologies, addresses the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology. Dr. Rayegani discusses the critical role played by Canadian educational institutions like Sheridan in shaping the future of advanced on ageism launchedRevera and the Centre for Elder Research join forces to investigate ageism, the most tolerated form of social prejudice in Canada compared to gender or race-based discrimination. The Revera Report on Ageism: Independence & Choice As We Age examines the roles that independence and choice have in our lives, and specifically delves into the impact of ageism when it comes to providing care and support for older adults.
10 Sheridan and Revera release the report together with Hazel McCallion, Sheridan s Chancellor and Revera s Chief Elder Officer. The full report is available on Creative aging is about possibilities, freeing ourselves of limiting beliefs about aging and embracing the reality that individuals continue to grow, learn and contribute to their communities throughout the life journey. Pat Spadafora, Director, Sheridan Centre for Elder ResearchMAY/JUNE 2016 Research awards JUNE Sheridan receives funding for three more projects under the social Science and Humanities Research Council s (SSHRC) College and Community social Innovation Fund (Round Two). Please see page 7 for project details. The SSHRC social Innovation grant has enabled SIRT to work with community social practice researchers and students who have introduced a new human-centric research perspective to our industry-leading virtual reality research p ro ject s.
