Transcription of Post-Operative Instructions

Closed Weekends and Holidays We are not available overnight, on weekends, or holidays. Post-Operative Instructions Your pet has been under general anesthesia and has had a surgical operation. Your pet will probably be sleepy tonight. YES Keep your pet inside in a small, warm, and quiet area where he/she can rest and recover from surgery. YES Offer your pet a small amount of water and small amount of food only if he/she is not vomiting when getting home. Make sure they have settled down. Too much food/water/excitement may cause vomiting. YES Check the incision every day for excessive swelling, blood or pus leakage, or excessive bruising. Do not apply cleaner or ointment to the incision. Call us with any concerns. Yes Your pet was given a pain injection while at the clinic.
2 If your pet went home with any medication, please give it exactly as directed on label. Start extra pain medication tonight, before bed. Call if your pet is in pain. Recheck the incision in about 7 days to make sure healing is normal at your regular full service veterinarian. Maybe Some cats/kittens will experience dysphoria due to the anesthesia. Signs are erratic movements, not reacting normally, jerky movements. This will decrease and resolve over 24-48 hours. No Suture removal needed. Unless otherwise noted, all sutures are under the skin. No Baths or swimming for 7 days No Rough play for 7 days. Keep your pet quiet so the incision can heal. No Licking the incision. This can cause the incision to open or become infected. If your pet is licking, get an Elizabethan collar (cone) immediately. They must wear it at night and while you are not watching. No Access to other adult intact animals for at least one month.
3 What is normal? Your pet may be tired and sedate for 24 hours or so. They may act very different. There may be slight swelling at the incision site. There may be slight bruising at the incision site. Occasionally there is firm, painless swelling where the body is reacting to the internal sutures. This goes away as the sutures dissolve in 30 90 days. PLEASE contact us immediately with concerns. Many times we can address minor concerns but may have to refer you to your regular vet. You are responsible for following all Post-Operative Instructions exactly and for all of your pet s medical needs. What is NOT normal (Call us, See your Regular Veterinarian or Emergency Hospital): Lethargy or depression lasting for more than 24 hours after surgery Excessive swelling at the incision site (this will happen if your pet s activity is not limited) Any blood, pus, or fluid leaking from the incision Pain at the incision Vomiting and having diarrhea Blood leaking from the penis (male) or vagina (female) Difficulty urinating Pale gums Labored breathing
