Birmingham Bar Association Probate Law Section Established 2011 In the spring of 2011, Probate Judge Alan L. King contacted the Executive Director of the Birmingham Bar Association , Bo Landrum, and the President of the Birmingham Bar Association , Greg Hawley, about organizing a Probate Law Section . Following a series of meetings with groups of attorneys who regularly appeared in Jefferson County Probate Court, the decision was made to proceed with organizing a Probate Law Section , and an Application was prepared. The Executive Committee of the Birmingham Bar Association approved our Application, and, in the Fall of 2011, approximately 85 attorneys became charter members. The Probate Law Section immediately became one of the largest sections of the Birmingham Bar Association . By 2012, the Section had grown to over 170 members, and to over 200 the following year, and each year, to date, thereafter.

1 Birmingham Bar Association Probate Law Section Established 2011 In the spring of 2011, Probate Judge Alan L. King contacted the Executive Director of the Birmingham Bar Association , Bo Landrum, and the President of the Birmingham Bar Association , Greg Hawley, about organizing a Probate Law Section . Following a series of meetings with groups of attorneys who regularly appeared in Jefferson County Probate Court, the decision was made to proceed with organizing a Probate Law Section , and an Application was prepared. The Executive Committee of the Birmingham Bar Association approved our Application, and, in the Fall of 2011, approximately 85 attorneys became charter members. The Probate Law Section immediately became one of the largest sections of the Birmingham Bar Association . By 2012, the Section had grown to over 170 members, and to over 200 the following year, and each year, to date, thereafter.

2 As stated in our By-Laws, the Probate Law Section was organized to: (a.) enhance the relationships among attorneys who practice or are interested in Probate law; (b.) promote the professional development, welfare, interests and education of the members of the Section ; (c.) provide meaningful services and educational programs for the benefit of the members of the Section and the Bar; (d.) encourage involvement of the Membership in activities of the Bar; and (e.) provide appropriate information and assistance to the local community. Throughout the year the Probate Law Section has Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs (generally one-hour lunch and learn programs), and we have our Annual full-day CLE in early December which is held in the Ceremonial Courtroom of the Presiding Circuit Court Judge and which draws in excess of 100 attorneys each year.

3 We also have several social events during the year. There is an after-hours get-together during the spring , and the Annual Probate Night at the Birmingham Barons during the Summer is a highlight, as is the Dia de Muerto ( Day of the Dead aka All Souls Day or All Saints Day, celebrated throughout the world in late October/early November, at which time there is a gathering to remember friends and family members who have died), and the year-end social following the Annual Meeting in December.
