2 There is much toperuse in our Quarterly Departmental Newsletter. I shareyour pride in acknowledging the work of faculty, staff andlearners as we celebrate again the top ranking in the USNews and World Report for primary care, family medicineand rural medicine. Hooray and congratulations to all!March was exciting for another reason, Match Day!Congratulations to our Residency Program faculty, staffand residents for a very successful recruitment are an organization s most valuable resource and thus by my estimation, thisDepartment is wealthy. Please read about the life and work of MEDEX founder A. Smith to be further inspired to live fearlessly. Then, know that we havepeople striving to change the world and recognized in our Award & Recognitionsection.

3 We are excited to welcome two important new resources for the DFM. MinaMarcher joined us in February as our new Human Resources Manager and AmonJohnson joined us earlier this month as our DFM Manager of Databases and Research Section is impacting the world from Dr. Thompson s work in Malawi andZimbabwe to more local news from our work in rural health to the annual WPRN meeting. Finally, our Medical Student Section took great pride in having the highestpercentage of students match in family medicine in the history of our medical work Dr. Keen and colleagues!Paul A. 4 For the 23rd time in the past 24 years, the Universityof Washington ranked as the No. 1 primary caremedical education program in the country, accordingto News & World Report s 2018 Best GraduateSchool rankings released Tuesday. Smith passedaway on March 10, 2017 Global health leader and widely recognized founderof the physician assistant (PA) profession, RichardA. Smith, , , died March 10, at his homein Honolulu, Hawaii. He was 84. Dr. Smith wasrecently honored by President Barack Obama for hismany contributions in the areas of PA education,racial desegregation and global health.

6 Dr. Smith hasdevoted his lifetime to the cause of improvingaccess to basic healthcare in urban, rural andunderserved communities across the United Statesand around the world. Dr. Larsonreceived this award at the NW Rural Health Conference. Palliative Care team member Tracy Ng receivesGolden Eddy Award for Outstanding Patient andFamily EducatorsGrace Parker, Chief Nursing Officer, and Cindy Sayre,Associate Administrator, presented awards to the 15individuals and nine teams who are this year srecipients including Tracy Ng and Beth Chance fortheir work on the ICU Children s Coloring UpdatesWWAMI NETWORKWWAMI Rural Training Track MeetingOn February 27 the Family Medicine Residency Network held the 2nd annual WWAMIR ural Training Track meeting during the Northwest Rural Health Conference in Seattle.

9 Twenty-one residency program directors, faculty and staff attended from current anddeveloping WWAMI rural training tracks and programs. The meeting focused on thecollaboration between rural sites, communication with core programs and and Scholarly Activities GroupA group of about 15 faculty leads in research and scholarly activity from residencyprograms around the University of Washington Family Medicine Residency Network meton March 1 before the start of the annual WPRN meeting. The group had a livelydiscussion about challenges and successes of involving residents in research and scholarlyprojects and developed an initial list of best practices, ideas, and resources for programsworking to increase participation in research and scholarly activities throughout theWWAMI region.

10 Continued engagement of this group is planned with a listserve, resource-sharing, and occasional and Gold Foundation DeWitt C. Baldwin,Jr. Award RecipientsCongratulations to Montana Family Medicine forreceiving the 2017 ACGME and Gold FoundationDeWitt C. Baldwin, Jr. Award. Roxanne Fahrenwald,MD and John Felton, MPH, MBA were presented withthe award at the ACGME conference in March. Theaward recognizes institutions with accreditedresidency/fellowship programs that are exemplary infostering a respectful, supportive environment formedical education and the delivery of patient care,which leads to the personal and professionaldevelopment of learners .Congratulations to Valley Family Medicine and Alaska Family Medicine!
