2 The Supervisor Engine 2 is a keycomponent of the new Cisco Express Forwarding(CEF)-based architecture that enables distributedforwarding. The Supervisor Engine 2 also acts asthe control module for the Catalyst 6500 seriesarchitecture built around the crossbar fabricwhich scales the bandwidth to 256 Engine 2 is required to enable aCatalyst 6500 Series with a 256-Gbps Engine 2 allows connections to boththe existing bus and switch fabrics making it asuitable product for the entire Catalyst 6500 Series . Both Supervisor Engines 2 and1A deliver the most advanced intelligent switchingavailable in the industry, providing per-port applicationrecognition, admission control, prioritization, andpolicing with multiple hardware queues to minimizenetwork congestion and packet latency. This advancedQuality of Service (QoS) support is essential for enablingnetwork-wide deployment of mission-critical applicationsand enterprise voice services and solutions. SupervisorEngine 2 further enhances performance with features likemulticast replication in hardware, required for videostreaming applications.
4 This allows both enterprises andservices providers to use multiservice applicationswithout sacrificing Engines Provide IntelligentServicesCatalyst 6500 Series switches support both Supervisor 1 Aand 2, providing a scalable solution, investment protection,and common sparing options. These Supervisor enginesenable high-speed switching bandwidth, delivering superiorlevels of switching performance for high-density GigabitEthernet backbones. The Catalyst 6500 Series SupervisorEngine 1A supports up to 15 million packets per second(Mpps) in the existing 32-Gbps bus architecture with 130 Gigabit ports per chassis. Supervisor Engine 2, wheninstalled with the crossbar fabric, doubles the centralforwarding performance for both Layer 2 and Layer 3 to 30 Mpps and allows up to 194 Gigabit Ethernet ports perchassis.
5 Supervisor Engine 2 enables the distributedforwarding architecture that scales the aggregrateforwarding performance to 210 Mpps. Supervisor Engine 2also supports the new Optical Services Modules that provideoptical WAN connectivity via PXF processors for distributedhigh touch IP Services. Please refer to the following url formore information on Optical Services Modules: Both Supervisor Engine 1A and 2 providesupport for the FlexWAN module for WAN-edgeconnectivity. The Supervisor Engine 1A is positioned inPremier AVVID wiring closets, whereas Supervisor Engine 2is positioned in the high density Premier AVVID wiringcloset, distribution and core, where distributed Layer 3services are required.
6 Supervisor Engine 2 can also bepositioned in high-end server farms in both service providersand large enterprises, where distributed forwarding canprovide performance scalability. 7 Supervisor Engine 2 consists of three separatecomponents including:1. Supervisor Engine The Supervisor engine itself thatprovides connectivity to the 32 Gbps bus as well as thecrossbar Policy Feature Card (PFC) 2 Supervisor Engine 2ships with a PFC2 that constitutes a criticalcomponent of the distributed CEF architecture. Itcontains all Application-Specific Integrated Circuits(ASICs) for Layer 2 and 3 look-ups and performsmany Cisco IOS features in hardware. It performs IPUnicast and Multicast forwarding, QoS, and AccessControl List (ACL) lookups in central forwarding to 30 Multilayer Switch Feature Card (MSFC) 2 This cardis a configurable option, performs Layer 3functionality and is a requirement for CEF-basedforwarding information base (FIB).

All Rights 3 of 14 PFC2 is a critical component of the distributed forwardingarchitecture. With Supervisor Engine 2, both Layer 2 andLayer 3 performance is doubled to 30 Mpps. A SupervisorEngine 2 equipped with a PFC2 and an optional MSFC2enables a distributed forwarding mechanism for bothLayer 2 and Layer 3 that is an effective solution for serviceproviders as well as large enterprises. In a CEF-basedarchitecture, a FIB and an adjacency table is created for Layer3 forwarding.
9 This FIB has the most current routinginformation and eliminates the need for the first packet ofevery flow to be switched in software. When an MSFC2 isnot present, Layer 2 forwarding is also performed centrallyin hardware, via ASICs, at 30 Mpps. MSFC2 is, however,required for both Layer 3 central forwarding at 30 Mpps aswell as distributed forwarding. This is because distributedforwarding is only supported in Cisco IOS software, whichrequires an MSFC2. IP multicast replication and forwardingis also performed directly in hardware. Thus, a SupervisorEngine 2 can be deployed in scenarios with or without anMSFC2 for higher centralized forwarding performance.
