1 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 18/12/2012 Brun-Way and Gateway Operations Win National safe & sustainable snowfighting Awards FREDERICTON/SAINT JOHN Route 1 highway operator Gateway Operations and Route 2 highway operator Brun-Way Highways Operations Inc. have each won a 2012 safe and sustainable snowfighting award from the North American organization, Salt Institute. This was the first year for the safe and sustainable snowfighting award that was developed by Salt Institute in conjunction with the American Public Work Association winter maintenance committee.

2 Winners must demonstrate dedication to excellence in environment consciousness, good housekeeping and best management practices. Rom o Poitras, Operations Manager for Brun-Way , is honored that the New Brunswick-based company has received this award. I am very proud that the Salt Institute has recognized our hard work in salt storage and our dedication to best practices . Brun-Way is not only thinking about the management of salt in our Operations but also about the environmental impact, and most importantly, the safety of the travelling public.

3 These facilities have cleared a high bar, said Salt Institute President Lori Roman. For example, in minimizing salt runoff alone, 10 specific recommendations must be met. The familiar sight of trucks spreading salt on icy winter roads gives motorists reassurance, as it should, said Roman. If that salt was stored in and spread by a facility honored with a safe and sustainable snowfighting award, motorists have the added assurance of knowing the utmost care has been taken to protect public safety and the environment. Mark Kenny, Operations Manager for Gateway Operations is also honored to be the recipient of the safe and sustainable snowfighting award.

4 Winning this award for our Snow and Ice Control (SNIC) practices, in only our second season is a true accomplishment. Our practices are based on safe , efficient and environmentally sound principles in the selection, handling, storage and application of SNIC materials. The sharing of information amongst our colleagues and organizations such as the Salt Institute, American Public Works Association, and the Canadian Public Works Association has enabled our team to implement best practices in the interest of public safety and the environment.

5 These awards are an indication of environmental stewardship and quality service being provided by our private sector partners in New Brunswick, said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claude Williams. I am especially pleased to see them being recognized for their expertise in safe and sustainable snow fighting because it shows the travelling public can count on them to do what s best for highway safety and the environment.
