1 1 Upgrading to LexisNexis Time Matters This guide provides a checklist of steps for a successful upgrade to Time Matters Use this checklist in combination with the Time Matters Install Guide, which is available on the Time Matters download page. Why Upgrade? Time Matters contains many improvements over version , including a new Mobility service, support for Microsoft Windows Terminal Services environments, improved links to LexisNexis pclaw and LexisNexis Juris billing and accounting products, new and enhanced third party software integration, and quality improvements based on customer feedback. Upgrading to Time Matters provides: Increased firm productivity and profitability Enhanced client service levels Improved firm efficiency Before You Upgrade Upgrading is a straightforward process, but it does take a little planning.
2 Please take a minute or two to review this entire checklist. The Time Matters system will be unavailable during the upgrade, so it is important to be prepared and understand the steps involved before you begin. Complete the following steps before installing Time Matters 1. Review Time Matters system requirements. Ensure that your server and workstation computers will support Time Matters by checking out the system requirements page on the LexisNexis Customer Support web site. 2. Synchronize PDAs and third party software. Instruct all Time Matters users to synchronize their handheld devices with Time Matters . Do the same for Microsoft Exchange and other applications that you are using with Time Matters . This ensures that your existing database is up to date before you import the data into Time Matters See Setting Up Handheld & Application Sync on page 25 of the Install Guide.
3 3. Back up your existing Time Matters data and shared files. Make a backup copy of your existing Time Matters database and shared files. This ensures that you can restore Time Matters to a functional state should something unexpected happen during the upgrade. See Backing Up Data on page 21 of the Install Guide. 2 Performing the Upgrade Do the following steps after you have completed all the steps in the preceding section. 4. Download the Time Matters installation files. The e mail you received acknowledging your entitlement to Time Matters contains a link to download the software. Note that there are three separate files to download: one to install Time Matters ( ), one to install the new Time Matters Mobility service ( ), and one to install Microsoft Exchange Synchronization ( ).
4 Follow each link and save the file shown in the pop up window. 5. Install Time Matters Run the Time Matters installation wizard ( ) and follow the instructions in the wizard. Note: Be sure you install with Administrator privileges. 6. Register Time Matters When you start Time Matters for the first time, you will be connected to the LexisNexis registration server. A success message will appear when the registration is complete. 7. Import data from your previous version of Time Matters . After completing registration, you will automatically be prompted to import data from your previous version of Time Matters . In addition, you may also need to convert billing and/or accounting data if you use Billing Matters . See Importing Data from a Previous Installation on page 42 of the Install Guide.
5 Important: Check your data to ensure that it has been completely and correctly imported. 8. Send installation instructions to the Time Matters users in your firm. Copy the information on the last screen of the import wizard and send it to all of your Time Matters users. This information includes the path to a setup file ( ) that resides in the Setup folder in your Time Matters shared files location. When this file is used to install Time Matters , the application will be pre configured to connect to your version database. (Note: This step applies to users who will access Time Matters via the client software and not through Microsoft Windows Terminal Services.) 9. Back up your Time Matters data and shared files. Run the backup procedure in Time Matters to back up your database and shared files.

Synchronize PDAs and third party software with Time Matters Instruct Time Matters users to synchronize their handheld devices with the new Time Matters database. Do the same for Microsoft Exchange and other third party applications. See Setting Up Handheld & Application Sync on page 25 of the Install Guide. 11. Copy program customizations. Some user customizable features such as Power Views and Drop down Field Values are based on files external to Time Matters . Time Matters now copies these files over during the install if you so choose. If you did not elect to do this step during installation, these files must now be manually copied to the correct locations in order for the customizations to be available in Time Matters See Copying Your Customized Features to Time Matters on page 47 of the Install Guide.
7 12. (Optional) Install Time Matters Mobility and Microsoft Exchange Synchronization. Run the installation wizards for the additional features you want to use: for Time Matters Mobility, and for Microsoft Exchange Synchronization.
