1 Columbus State Community College Post- Secondary programs for individuals with disabilities Who qualifies for the program? Programs are designed for individuals with a developmental, intellectual or specific learning disability. Students must have high school diploma or GED (in order to use financial aid). Students must be able to commit to going to school for a year Students must be able to meet a background check Students must be able to acquire a physicians verification form (depending on program). What are the programs? Students can choose from 3 programs.
2 One year Part-time (6 credits). Three semesters Programs begin Summer Semester Students attend program as cohort What type of programs? Human Services Assistant Certificate- Students learn skills to assist adults with DD through a day program or nursing home center Early Childhood Aide Certificate- Students learn to assist a lead teacher in early childhood setting working with ages 0-5. New, piloted Recreation Assistant Program- Students learn how to assist in recreation, health and wellness or fitness type setting. (Grant funded- Not a ). Will they take classes at Columbus State ?
3 Yes! This is a College based program. Classes are taught at Columbus State (Main Campus). Students typically attend 1-3 days per week All courses within the programs are for College credit. All courses can transfer to a degree. **Recreation program is not a recognized certificate. Students will obtain a certificate of completion . Courses also transfer. What else? Students attend 2 semesters of practicum/internships. 10-14 hours per week at an assigned agency (while taking classes). Example: Students attending Early Childhood might be placed at a KinderCare.
4 Efforts are made to keep students and practicums close to home. What type of supports? Human Services and Early Childhood are modified courses (5th grade reading level). Recreation courses are integrated at typical College level. 1 teaching assistant is assigned to each program. TA's provide academic supports and practicum supports Supports for individuals with Students with an intellectual/cognitive disability may qualify for COMPETE program (grant funded). Students partake in chosen program with additional supports. Person Centered Planning Non-Credit Classes encompassing Student Life, Career and Workplace Readiness, Self-Determination, Student Community Additional Classes Fitness Center/ fitness classes Clubs and Organizations Sports (Basketball, Volleyball, etc.)
5 Transportation is the student's responsibility CSCC does not provide transportation Providers Cota/Mainstream Carpool Parents Some can drive Students must be able to get to class and practicum. How much is the program? Students pay same tuition as other students ($135 per credit hour). Programs range between $2300-$2800. Programs Qualify for Financial Aid (If student/families qualify). Pell grant and Scholarships Books are provided BCI- $30 FBI- $35. COMPETE programs may eventually apply Employment Outcomes Students obtain employment opportunities through practicums.
6 HSA- Easter Seals, West Central, Goodwill, All R Friends, Learning Never Ends, etc. ECA- HeadStart, Kindercare, YMCA. REC- to be determined 65%-80% percent employment outcome Application Process Student Interview Apply to College Submit program application 3 recommendation letters Provide IEP/ETR or Psych Evaluation Provide guardianship forms Take Placement Test (scores are not weighted).
