4 In the days when the primary power source aboard a ship was muscle power, songs sung at sea served a practical purpose in that they were used to co-ordinate the work of sailors. Come and learn the difference between a long haul and a short haul shanty, a halyard shanty and a capstan shanty among others. Songs might include pirate hymns, whaling songs, and smuggling and wrecking ballads. No singing ability or experience necessary.
