The Elk River spill in uenced the U.S. Congress to pass the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act. The Act, which was signed into law on June 22, 2016; revamped the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act providing mechanisms to better manage new chemicals and those already in commercial use.
