Jaundice is the most common cause of readmission after discharge from birth hospitalization.1 Jaundice in neonates is visible in skin and eyes when total serum bilirubin (TSB) concentration exceeds 5 to 7 mg/dL. In contrast, adults have jaundice visible in eyes (but not in skin) when TSB concentration exceeds 2 mg/dL.
