semicircular canal. Canalithiasis can occur in any canal. The posterior semicircular canal (PSC) was affected in the majority of cases of BPPV (93% of cases) [9], with 85% being unilateral, and 8% affecting the PSC on both sides. The horizontal semicircular canal (HSC) was affected in 5% of cases. Involvement of an anterior canal is rare.

Otolith organs The otolith organs are small sacs at the base of the semicircular canals. They are embedded with sensory hairs and contain a gelatinous membrane with chalk-like crystals – called otoliths. As the head or body moves, the movement of the membrane against the sensory hairs registers gravity.

the otolith organ.2, 3 These crystal particles can break free from the otolith organ and then become free floating within the inner ear chambers. In most cases of BPPV, the canaliths enter the posterior semi-circular canal where they become trapped due to the anatomy of the canal and the effects of gravity. The canaliths move in the canal when
