7 Joe s Chapel) Oct 22 7:30pm Women s Bereavement (PC) Oct 23 7:30pm Pastoral Council Meeting (PC) Oct 25 7:30pm family Mass Rehearsal (Church) Oct 30 6:30pm Dear Friends . I'm delighted to share with you that the gentleman who smashed the images of Our Lord, The Blessed Mother and St. John in our outdoor shrine made a confession to Verona Police. I've long believed that we are blessed to have the finest police officers I've ever known and worked with over the years and this is just one example of many I've witnessed. The Essex County prosecutor labeled this a bias crime so more details will follow in the upcoming months and I'll do my best to keep you all informed and up to date.

8 Here's a quick recap of I/we know. I was alerted this past Palm Sunday that the statues were vandalized and made a police report right away. By Holy Thursday of that week the media descended and I made a statement to forgive the one(s) responsible and would offer my Good Friday fasting, and Easter prayers for a resolution on this matter and this is the result. You can find the article on and perhaps other media outlets. The gentleman offered, as a motive, his thought that the presence of the religious images violates bible mandates. Sadly, this represents a very narrow view and non wholistic approach to the scriptures which often gets people in spiritual trouble. While the 10 commandments strictly forbid the worship of images the Bible does, however, encourage the use of images: Exodus 25: 18-20.

9 "And you shall make two cherubim of gold (two gold statues of angels) of hammered work shall you make them, on the two ends of the mercy seat. Make one cherub on the one end, and one cherub on the other end; on one piece of the mercy seat shall you make the cherubim on its two ends. The cherubim shall spread out their wings, overshadowing the mercy seat with they wings, their faces one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubim be." Ezekiel 41: 17-18 describes graven (carved) images in the idealized temple he was shown in a vision, for he writes, "on the walls round about in the inner room and on the nave were carved likenesses of cherubim." God told Moses to make a statue of a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and every one who is bitten, when he sees it shall live.

10 So Moses made a bronze serpent, and set in on a pole; and if a serpent bit any man, he would look at the bronze serpent and live". Numbers 21: 8-9. Sadly, it is not uncommon for one to take a scripture verse or passage out of context and build one's own theory on it. A Catholic approach to scripture is to read the whole passage and read it in context with a larger whole and the intended consistent message of revealed word of God. The statues have been repaired and I have signed a contract with a company to install security cameras for the whole parish campus. While I'm hoping that insurance will cover the cost of the statue repair, I will be asking you to help contribute toward the security camera project shortly. Peace, blessings and fraternal regards, Fr.
