1 Medication Administration 5-hour Course for Adult care Homes This online Course follows the NC DHHS 5-hour curriculum which was built around the current skills checklist required for medication staff in Adult care Homes . The majority of the state 5 hour Course schedule centers around time spent for instruction and validation of skills required for medication administration. Individuals are expected to pass the clinical skills tasks with 100% competency demonstrated. The design of the Course was for a small class of employees or 1:1 training for a specific facility. MEDAD05-0 Prerequisite: Prerequisite Skills Review and Validation State objectives: Demonstrate correct technique in obtaining and recording a blood pressure. Demonstrate correct technique in obtaining and recording a radial and apical pulse. Demonstrate correct technique in obtaining and recording a respiratory rate. Demonstrate correct technique in obtaining a temperature. Demonstrate correct technique with assisted glucose monitoring MEDAD05-1 Section 1: Basic Medication Administration Information/Terminology State objectives: Match common medical abbreviations with their meaning.

3 List and describe common dosage forms of medications. List and describe common routes of medication administration. List the six rights of medication administration. Describe what constitutes a medication error and actions to take when a medication error is made or detected. Describe resident's rights regarding medications refusal, privacy, respect, and chemical restraint. Define medication allergy and describe responsibility in relation to identified allergies and suspected side effects. Demonstrate the use of medication resources or references. MEDAD05-2 Section 2: Medication Orders State objectives: List/recognize the components of a complete medication order.

4 Transcribe orders onto the Medication Administration Record (MAR) correctly use proper abbreviations, calculate stop dates correctly, transcribe PRN orders appropriately, copy orders completely and legibly and/or check computer sheets against orders and apply to the MAR, and discontinue orders. Describe the responsibility of the Medication Aide in relation to admission orders, readmission orders, and FL 2 forms. Identify required information on the medication label. 6 MEDAD05-4 Section 4: Ordering, Storage and Disposal of Medications State objectives: Describe procedures for reordering medications and ensuring medications ordered are available for administration. Describe correct storage and securing of medications. Maintain an accurate inventory of controlled substances. Identify the procedures for disposal of medications. MEDAD05-5 Section 5: Medication Administration Skills Review This module provides a comprehensive review of the skills checklists for the trainee. 10- hour Course for Adult care Homes The 10 hour training Course builds upon content in the initial 5 hour training Course and developed as a refresher for the employee.

7 The 10 hour training Course includes random competency validation of skills required for medication administration. A prerequisite for the 10 hour training Course is successful completion of the 5 hour training Course . The design of the Course is for a larger class than the 5 hour training Course but still limited in size to allow for interactive activities and practice of safe medication administration skills. This Introduction includes the role and expectations of the medication aide in Adult care Homes plus the following: Overview of Medication Administration Medication Orders Medication Administration Record (MAR).

This Medication Administration Legal and Ethical Standards module is designed to meet the requirements of the North Carolina Medication Aide Course , Section C. During the second module on use of the MAR in preventing medication errors, the content includes a review of the Six Rights of Medication Administration and covers some systems that can be put in place to prevent medication errors.
