_____ 500-2 MANHOLE AND STRUCTURE rehabilitation 500-2 MANHOLE AND STRUCTURE rehabilitation requirements . General. This subsection covers the various MANHOLE and STRUCTURE rehabilitation materials and methods. The types of rehabilitation materials and methods shall be shown on the Plans and described in the Special Provisions. Unless otherwise provided for in the Special Provisions, proof of meeting the Chemical Resistance and Physical Testing in 211-2 and (A) and (A) shall be submitted to the Engineer for approval in accordance with Installer Qualifications. The Contractor performing the work shall be a certified installer of the proposed lining system, and the field personnel shall be adequately trained in maintenance and operation of the required installation equipment, as directed by the lining material manufacturer.

A letter from the manufacturer of the lining system, dated no later date than twelve (12) months from the date of the award of the contract, verifying the certification of the installing contractor, the name of the trained supervisor and applicators required to be on-site during installation, shall be submitted in accordance with Cleaning, Inspection and Surface Preparation. Prior to the installation of the lining material, the specified STRUCTURE shall be prepared to produce a concrete or masonry surface that is suitable for application and adhesion of the specified lining material. Cleaning methods may include high pressure water cleaning at a minimum of MPa (5,000 psi) and/or abrasive blast, or other methods as recommended by the manufacturer of the lining system and approved by the Engineer in accordance with The Contractor shall protect the STRUCTURE from damage by the cleaning equipment, water and air pressure.

Where the limits of the lining system require flow bypassing, it shall be used and performed as specified in Cleaning and surface preparation shall remove any protrusions on the surface of the STRUCTURE which could interfere with the installation of the lining system; and inspect the STRUCTURE for any structural damages and leaks. MANHOLE steps, pull rings and lifting eyes shall be installed or removed as indicated on the Plans or in the Special Provisions. Debris from the cleaning operation shall not be allowed to enter the sewer system. The Contractor shall provide the necessary debris containment devices while maintaining sewer flow, as approved by the Engineer. The Contractor shall remove and dispose of all debris collected from the cleaning operation per If reinforcing steel is exposed, including those exposed after removing deteriorated concrete, it shall be thoroughly cleaned to remove all contamination and rust particles.

Immediately after the cleaned reinforcing steel is inspected and accepted by the Engineer, the Contractor shall place a protective coating on the exposed reinforcing steel in accordance with the manufacturer s specification and as approved by the Engineer. Repair, Resurfacing and Active Infiltration. All repair, resurfacing and active infiltration elimination materials shall be compatible with the lining materials and methods used and proof of compatibility shall be provided to the Engineer for approval in accordance with (A) Repair. Prior to lining system installation, patching or localized repairs shall be performed using rapid setting repair mortars compatible with the lining system used to fill surface _____ irregularities, voids, deteriorated surfaces and to repair the host STRUCTURE to a uniform surface. Manufacturer specifications shall be followed with repair material handling, mixing, installation and curing.

Certificate of Compliance per confirming compatibility shall be provided to the Engineer for approval in accordance with (B) Resurfacing. Air Placed Concrete (APC) materials, if required by the Special Provisions, shall conform to Prior to the application of APC, the STRUCTURE shall be prepared to produce a concrete or masonry surface that is suitable for application and adhesion of the specified APC. The APC shall be applied in continuous lifts at 13 mm ( inch) minimum thickness or as shown on the Plans and/or in the Special Provisions to resurface the host STRUCTURE to a uniform surface. Containment devices, pre approved by the Engineer, shall be used to prevent rebound (non-adhering excess APC) from entering the sewer system. Sewer flows shall be maintained unless otherwise specified in the Special Provisions. Immediately following the APC placement operation, the containment device shall be removed and the structures cover reinstalled to provide a moist curing environment.

Where moist conditions within the STRUCTURE do not exist, the Contractor shall provide a water cure to the APC for a minimum of 24 hours prior to application of the lining as specified in and All defects in the APC shall be repaired as specified in 303-2 prior to the installation of the liner system. (C) Active Infiltration. All active leaks shall be stopped prior to liner installation. The leaks shall be stopped by pressure grouting with chemical grouts as specified in Special Provisions and/or the application of hydraulic cement per All structures shall be visibly dry with no active infiltration prior to lining. Chemical grouts and hydraulic cements shall be compatible with the lining system used. Material information and Certificate of Compliance per confirming compatibility shall be provided to the Engineer for approval in accordance with Field Inspection, Testing and Repair of Installed Liner Systems.

The party performing the test shall be specified in the Special Provisions. If the testing party is to be selected by the Contractor, then the name of the testing party and the information on the testing instruments to be used for adhesion testing and its calibration shall be provided to the Engineer for approval in accordance with (A) High Voltage Spark Test. The cured lining system shall be spark tested for pinholes with a high voltage holiday detector instrument, a Tinker and Rasor AP/W or similar device. The voltage shall be set at a minimum of 15,000 volts. For thickness greater than 150 mils, the voltage shall be set at 100 volts per mil of thickness of the applied lining material. For PVC liner systems the voltage shall be set per All surfaces shall be high voltage spark tested. Identified holidays shall be marked without contaminating the lining surface and repaired in accordance with (C).

(B) Mill Gauge Test. During installation a mill gauge shall be used to verify that a minimum thickness of the coating meets and/or exceeds the thickness specified in the Special Provisions. (C) Adhesion Testing. The adhesion tests shall be performed on a minimum of one or 15% of all rehabilitated structures, which ever is greater, or as shown on the Plan and/or specified in the Special Provisions. Adhesion testing shall be conducted after the liner system has cured per manufacturer instruction and in accordance with ASTM D4541 as modified herein. _____ A minimum of one 20 mm dolly shall be affixed to the lined surface of the STRUCTURE at the upper section or cone area, mid section and at the bottom, unless otherwise specified in the Special Provisions. Each testing location shall be identified by the Engineer.

The adhesive used to attach the dollies to the liner shall be rapid setting with tensile strength in excess of the liner material and permitted to cure in accordance with manufacturer recommendations. The lining material and dollies shall be adequately prepared to receive the adhesive. Prior to pull test, the Contractor shall utilize a scoring device to cut through the coating until the substrate is reached. Extreme care shall be required while scoring to prevent micro cracking in the coating, since cracks may cause failures at diminished strengths. Failure due to improper dolly adhesive or scoring shall require retesting. The pull tests in each area shall meet or exceed 200 psi. and shall include subbase adhered to the back of the dolly or no visual signs of coating material in the test hole. Pull tests with results between a minimum 150 psi and 200 psi shall be acceptable if more than 50% of the subsurface is adhered to the back of the dolly.

A test result can be discarded, as determined by the Engineer, if there is a valid nonstatistical reason for discarding the test results as directed by Sections and of ASTM D4541. If any test fails, a minimum of three additional locations in the section of the failure shall be tested, as directed by the Engineer. If any of the retests fail all loosely adhered or unadhered liner in the failed area, as determined by the Engineer, shall be removed and replaced at the Contractor s expense. If a STRUCTURE fails the adhesion test, one additional STRUCTURE or 10% of the initial number of structures selected for testing shall be tested at the discretion of the Engineer and/or as specified in the Special Provisions. (C) Repairs of Liner Systems. All pinholes, uncured lining, blisters, surface imperfections and damage to the liner resulting from the adhesion test shall be prepared to a point 25 mm (1 inch) minimum beyond the limits of the damaged area to receive the liner repair.
