6 Draft Manuscript Last Saved June 4, 2007 v The Beginning MORE ABOUT THE TERRIBLE BLACK HORSE. Alexandria, July 25, 1861. I. overheard one of the men sitting on the doorstep of the house describing the charge of the Black Horse Cavalry, part of which, I believe, is Capt. Scott's Fauquier cavalry. He said they advanced in a wedge form, then opened, disclosing a battery which fired upon his regiment, and that then the cavalry charged upon the regiment, hemming it in on all sides; and, cutting right and left with tremendous blows, each blow powerful enough to take off a man's head. He said he never wished to see such a charge again.

9 Special thanks go to the following: The late John K. Gott, who was consulted by anyone writing about Fauquier County history, for his help in straightening out various Fauquier family lines. Robert K. Krick, Chief Historian of the Fredericksburg National Battlefield Parks, for his generous sharing of his voluminous files on Virginia soldiers in the War. Kenneth L. Stiles for the use of research material from his book on the Fourth Virginia Cavalry. Lee Shepherd, Assistant Director for Manuscripts and Archives and Sallie and William B. Thalhimer III Senior Archivist of the Virginia Historical Society, for his constant encouragement over many years and for always being on the lookout for snippets about Black Horsemen in new manuscript acquisitions.

10 Many descendants of Black Horsemen still reside in Fauquier County , and all contacted by the author were generous with their time and energy in tapping old trunks and photograph albums. But special thanks go to Scott Carter, the late Ripley Robinson, the late Mrs. Philip Nelson, Mrs. Willard Lineweaver, Mrs. Ernest Lee Childs, Jr., and Col. Leila Kehoe. Acknowledgements The reference staff at the Fauquier County Library in Warrenton was most helpful. The former Clerk of the Fauquier Court, Mr. Harvey L. Pearson, was faithful to the memory of the several Black Horsemen who held that office and steered the author to precious data in Courthouse records.
