A Canadian Patrol & Tactical Carbine 300 Blackout Carl R. HOSPEDALES December 17, 2013 1 of 7 In Canada today the criminals are evolving, with tactics and equipping themselves with ever increasing firepower, supplied by various means Illegal Drugs Trade, Narco Terrorism to name just two. To combat this evolving threat, modern Law Enforcement has had to evolve also, moving from Patrol shotgun to Patrol rifle/ Carbine and sub machine guns (SMG) such as the Heckler & Koch MP5 & short-barrelled AR carbines for Special Response Tactical teams. These firearms are .223 , 9mm calibres. These ammunition selections have been dependant on practical mission requirements, terminal ballistic performance, cost and availability. As mentioned earlier, policing has to evolve with tactics & equipment.

I recently conducted research & analysis into ammunition and its terminal ballistic performance and was pleasantly surprised, finding a Cinderella round the 300 AAC Blackout aka 300 BLK, remember Cinderella had 2 ugly sisters (.223 & 9mm). My research started when I decided to build an AR platform for Test & Evaluation research, such as Piston driven system, Ammunition / Ballistics, Optic s and other associated accessories. I was discussing with a colleague what I was planning and he asked if I would be building a 300 Blackout (300 BLK). To be honest I was aware of this calibre, but it hadn t grabbed my attention as a viable Law Enforcement calibre candidate. But I, being curious decided to conduct further research, and what I discovered about this ammunitions ballistic performance, made me take this 300 BLK seriously as a round for Law Enforcement in both Patrol & Tactical Carbine applications.

So some of you are asking what s a 300 BLK? Well, simply put it s a bullet necked into a cartridge creating a round accepted by Sporting Arms & Ammunition Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI) in Jan 2011, what does accepted by SAAMI mean, well any ammunition made or guns chambered in that calibre have to be made to certain dimensions and specifications. The Technical Specs are .3090 inches x inches, weighing A Canadian Patrol & Tactical Carbine 300 Blackout Carl R. HOSPEDALES December 17, 2013 2 of 7 with 115gr, 125gr and 220gr. In essence a .30 Cal AR platform that gives good terminal ballistics due to its weight, for example the 300 BLK has more energy than the at 300 meters, and with a 9 barrel has the same energy at the muzzle as a M4 barrel providing 5% more energy at 440 meters.

As for it s subsonic ammunition 220gr it gives the benchmark supressed H&K MP5SD a run for the money. The 220gr Subsonic round, combined with a Advanced Armament Corp. (AAC) suppressor (dry) produces a 126-135db report with a 1-3 MOA at 100 Meters, compared to a H&K MP5SD producing a 126db report with a 6-9 MOA at 100 Meters, and a M4 with a SOPMOD Suppressor 138 db. The effective range of the 300 BLK: 125 Grain (Supersonic) 460 Meters (503 Yards) 16 Barrel 440 Meters (481 Yards) 9 Barrel 220 Grain (Subsonic) 200 meters (219 Yards) Muzzle Velocity 1000 Ft/Sec Remington ballistic performance data: Type Weight (Gr) Muzzle Velocity Ft/Sec Muzzle Energy Ft lbs. 5 A Canadian Patrol & Tactical Carbine 300 Blackout Carl R. HOSPEDALES December 17, 2013 3 of 7 Why is this such a shoe in for Patrol & Tactical CQB, the majority of Law Enforcement Carbine / SMG engagements happen within 50 meters, most Law Enforcement train out to 100 meters, so consider this for the increased stopping power of a over the Remington and sometimes 9mm sub guns, all from a 9 barrel AR platform Carbine . Some have said the 300 AAC Blackout is the modern evolution of the M1 Carbine cartridge and could also be utilized for hunting and defence with the use of the 110 gr supersonic ammunition. I am not saying one size fits all, but consider mass over velocity when it comes to terminal ballistic performance; you are engaging a target to neutralize the threat.

So how do you obtain a 300 BLK, well there is no need to buy a complete new Carbine , just modify your current AR platform. How do you modify a / .223 Remington Carbine ? Take a standard / .223 Remington AR Carbine and either simply replace the Upper receiver with a 300 BLK Upper Receiver or replace the barrel with a 300 BLK barrel, all other AR parts including the magazine remain the same. These are some of the manufacturers of the 300 BLK upper receivers, barrels, complete carbines and ammunition manufacturers below: A Canadian Patrol & Tactical Carbine 300 Blackout Carl R. HOSPEDALES December 17, 2013 4 of 7 Manufacturers: North Eastern Arms Group (Canada) Smith & Wesson Advanced Armament Corp. (AAC) Daniel Defence Bushmaster DPMS Panther Arms Noveske Rifle Works Spikes Tactical Ammunition: Blackhills Barnes CorBon Federal-American Eagle Hornady Remington You can also visit the official website: Something that has good terminal ballistics, can be utilized for self-defense at close quarters to medium distance 200 to 300 meters, the 300 BLK is that cartridge.

In the end the AAC 300 Blackout has fast become the ultimate urban defensive round for both Law Enforcement & Protective Security Details. Optics: Of all the optics available to the AR Carbine family, EOTech is the only company that produce a optic specifically for the 300 Black, the XPS2-300, this provides operational performance of night vision compatible, with 600 hours of continuous operations on a CR123 Lithium battery, waterproof down to 10ft, 65 MOA ring, A Canadian Patrol & Tactical Carbine 300 Blackout Carl R. HOSPEDALES December 17, 2013 5 of 7 with 2 x 1 MOA aiming dots, these dot could be set up for both Subsonic & Supersonic ammunition. It mounts on to a MIL-STD 1913 or a 1 Weaver Rail; this can be supplemented with a G33 3x Magnifier.

Suppressors: As for suppression of the 300 BLK, Suppressors (especially for civilian use, is a sensitive subject), but dear reader consider the following, suppressors are commonly referred to as "silencers", misled by the movies/TV shows as the silent tools of spies & assassins, the term Silencer is incorrect because No firearm! Can be made completely silent (Unless you live in the vacuum of space). The function of a suppressor is meant to diminish or suppress the report of a discharged round. Other sounds emanating from the weapon remain unchanged. Semi and fully automatic firearms make distinct noises as their actions cycle, ejecting the fired cartridge case and loading a new round. Even subsonic ammunition makes distinct sounds as they pass through the air and strike the target, and a supersonic round produce a small sonic boom, resulting in a "Ballistic crack" as anyone who has been shot at by a rifle will know and testify too.

The most important advantage of a firearms suppressor is the hearing protection for the shooter (aka Hearing Safe) as well as his/her teammates and or companions. An example being, some hunters have suffered permanent hearing damage due to someone else firing a high-caliber rifle too closely without a warning. Now consider the close confines of a building or your home, be it a house or an apartment and how sound is amplified in confined A Canadian Patrol & Tactical Carbine 300 Blackout Carl R. HOSPEDALES December 17, 2013 6 of 7 In the sport of shooting, use of suppressors for firearms, be it pistol or rifle, are used to mitigate the risks of litigation for personal injury, especially high-tone deafness resulting from shooting-induced hearing loss, additionally the associated noise pollution which in general is a problem for shooting sports, let alone self defence.

Unfortunately due to the negative Media perception in both movies and TV shows the general public and government perception of firearms suppression, various government authorities have opted to simply ban them from civilian use, unless you are Law Enforcement or Military or live in: Finland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden United Kingdom (Even though semi & automatic firearms are banned, it s considered, polite & courteous to suppress ones firearm.) USA (Unless one lives in the following States/District; California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and the District of Columbia.) Consider the following companies for 300 BLK suppression: NEA Inc. QDS-300 & Minican Mk2 Surefire: SOCOM762-MINI GEMTECH: GMT-300 Advanced Armament Corp.
