1 Revised March 2012 SELECTION FOR: pharmacy ( bpharm ) 1. introduction SELECTION takes place on the basis of a scientifically developed SELECTION model, based on: i) psychometric components (it takes approximately five hours to write the psychometric tests); ii) an ACADEMIC component (matric average). Students must bring a certified or signed (by the headmaster) statement of their marks or symbols in the June examination and submit it to the Admissions Office; and iii) a maths potential test and Chemistry potential test. The reason for this SELECTION test is that only a limited number of students can be admitted to the course.

2 The SELECTION model enables the University to identify the students who are best equipped to pass the course. It also allows learners who are not selected sufficient time to explore other career options or fields of study. If you are not selected, the second choice on the application form will be considered. The Admissions Office will communicate with you in this regard. NB Please note that the SELECTION model includes a Maths potential test and a Chemistry potential test. This test is not to be confused with the admission tests and are also not equivalent to the matric examination.

3 Its purpose is merely to determine whether students possess the basic skills (potential) in Maths/Chemistry to take the course. Students can thus prepare themselves for the test. Students must please bring a calculator as well as their university numbers. HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE MATHEMATICS TEST o The questionnaire consists of 30 multiple-choice items with four alternatives, one of which is the correct answer. o No theoretical knowledge, wording and proofs of theorems, other proofs and definitions are tested only applications of basic knowledge and use of basic techniques. o In Geometry, only calculations are asked angle sizes and relations.

4 O The Trigonometry questions involve the properties of the six trigonometry functions and graphs of the functions, period, amplitude, maximum and minimum values, asymptotes, ascending and descending phases, function values, etc. o Most of the questions deal with basic algebraic techniques regarding factorisation, completion of the square, solving of equations, graphs, rows and series, differential calculus, nature of the roots of quadratic equations, exponents and logarithms, basic properties of numbers, the remainder theorem, etc. o Non-programmable calculators must be used but will not be provided.
