[ELECTRO- Acupuncture IN OTOLARYNGOLOGY]. As an introduction to electro- Acupuncture , the author discusses the basic theory of classical Acupuncture as well as the therapeutic applications of low frequency positive or negative half-waves. Electro-therapy using specific points of Acupuncture which refer to selected organs can now be carried out with a compact apparatus called ELBION. This instrument had originally been designed by the author for reliable and uncomplicated applications in oto-rhino-laryngology. ELBION thus permits the realization of a complete electro- Acupuncture (EAP). Typical indications for EAP, as confirmed by the author, include influenzal anosmia, Bell's paralysis and central equilibrium disturbances of the neurovascular type.
3 EAP serves as a most helpful additional treatment in cases of frontal sinusitis, various kinds of neuralgia, cervical otalgia, as well as sialoses of obscure or chronic genesis. 6- gera: 22763/di/ra ANOSMIA-HYPOSMIA TREATMENT WITH ELECTROACUPUNCTURE (abstract). TANAKA O ET AL. third world conference on Acupuncture . 1993;:368. (eng). Olfactory responses are vital for many life processes for organisms, ranging from microorganisms to higher life forms such as mammals and humans.
6 Stimulation of Bilateral Lung Points (BLP's) by auricular Acupuncture has been shown in previous reports to result in various physiological responses. For example, salt sensitivity has been shown to increase due to BLP stimulation. Also, auricular stimulation of BLP's has been shown to stimulate weight loss in murine systems and in humans. However, there have been few reports concerning any additional specificities of physiological responses to BLP stimulation. We examined modulation of olfactory acuity by BLP stimulation in a controlled single blind study of a randomized population. We tested response to two odorous substances ( -phenyl ethyl alcohol and methyl cyclopentenolone) using a T&T Olfactometer (Takasago Manufacturing CO. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan). We found significant increases in olfactory acuity by acupunctural BLP stimulation compared with controls. Subjects: A randomized group of Twenty-three healthy Japanese volunteers was chosen for subjects.

Since 1994, 80 patients with hyp-or anosmia were treated by needle Acupuncture at our ENT-Department. Cases were classified according to their genesis in infectious, traumatic or idiopathic. For examination of smell and taste we used the Sniffin sticks developed by Kobal et al (identification, discrimination and n-butanol-threshold test) as well as the test set according to Ficketscher and Roseburg. Great emphasis was put on the patients history and examination. To exclude aggravation we additionally used combined taste and smell-test according to Guettich. Patients with a history of less than six month disease, acute infection, nasal obstruction (e.)
9 G. nasal polyps) and an already started medical treatment were excluded from our study. Acupuncture was performed according to the traditional Chinese medicine principles, two sessions weekly with a total number of 12 to 15. After completion of the treatment course the smell potential was again assessed using the methods mentioned above. Good results were obtained in patients with hyposmia of infectious origin. After therapy, 10 of 30 patients showed normosmia. 11 patients presented with a marked improvement. This means a successful therapy of influenza-associated hyposmia in 70%. In contrast, only 30% of anosmic patients responded to Acupuncture therapy. 16- gera: 73130/di/ra RHINITE ET anosmie . NGUYEN HUYNH-DIEU. revue francaise de mtc. 1998;178:239-40 (fra).

OSAMU TANAKA ET AL. american journal of chinese medicine. 1999;27(1):19 -24 (eng ). The modulation of olfactory thresholds by auricular Acupuncture at a specific auricular Acupuncture point was examined. The Lung Point, supplied by the auricular branch of the vagus nerve, was employed in a controlled single blind study of a randomized population of 23 healthy volunteers. Two odorous substances, betaPhenyl ethyl alcohol and Methyl cyclopentenolone were used to evaluate the modulation of olfactory thresholds after Acupuncture . A significant decrease in the olfactory recognition threshold by Acupuncture in comparison with controls (P < ) for two standard odors was observed.
