3 To supply an educational qualification that follows on a three-year teaching qualification (REQV 14). REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL ACE PROGRAMMES A teaching qualification of 360-credits on NQF level 5 (REQV 13), or An approved three-year teaching qualification. LANGUAGE Study guides are available in English and Afrikaans for most of the ACE programmes (except for the ACE in School Leadership and the ACE in Curriculum and Professional Development). Please indicate whether you require Afrikaans study guides, if nothing is indicated, you will automatically receive everything in English. A student may write examinations and submit assignments in either Afrikaans or English. Contact sessions are conducted mainly in English. APPLICATION All new applications must be accompanied by the following: 2 ID photos and a certified copy of the following: o ID Document o Grade 12 (matric) CERTIFICATE o Highest academic qualification (NPDE, HED ,etc) PLEASE TAKE NOTE: Students who wish to start their studies during the first semester of the 2009 academic year (starting 1 November 2008), must complete registration on or before 31 October.

4 Students who complete registration after this date will only start classes during the second semester of the 2009 academic year (starting 1 May 2009). Please refer to the relevant sections in this booklet regarding contact sessions, assignments and examination dates. REGISTRATION If your application has been approved, a registration form will be mailed to you. This registration form must be completed and returned to the Off-campus office promptly. Without this form you cannot be registered! Semesters begin 1 November 2008 to the end of April 2009 and from 1 May 2009 to the end of October 2009. Please indicate on the registration form (from the list provided), which study centre and examination centre you wish to attend class and write examinations at. Your first examination 2opportunity will depend on when your registration is finalized.

The university will send your study material to the address you indicated for the delivery of study material. Please note that you must indicate a physical address or work address for the delivery of the study material. Study material sent by the general postal services, must be collected from the post office within 7 working days.

6 If the package is not collected within 7 working days it will be returned to the University and the student will be liable for the cost of postage. You can collect your study material at the University, unless it is already dispatched. TAKE NOTE: IN FUTURE EXAM LETTERS WILL NOT BE SENT TO STUDENTS BY POST, BUT WILL BE AVAILABLE DURING CONTACT SESSIONS AT THE STUDY CENTRES. 3 QUALIFICATION STRUCTURE PhD MEd HonsBEd ADVANCED CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION (ACE) (1 YEAR) POST GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION (PGCE) (1 YEAR) YEAR 3 (NPDE) Foundation Phase Intermediate and Senior Phase Senior and FET Phase YEAR 2 (NPDE) PTC/ REQV 11 = RPL: Recognition of Prior Learning YEAR 1 (NPDE) Gr 12 / REQV 10 =1st Semester: RPL; 2nd Semester: credits through modular route Foundation phase, Intermediate and Senior phase, Senior and FET phase ANY OTHER DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION (THREE-YEAR) ACCREDITED DEGREE BA BSc, etc EXIT LEVEL After completing this programme, the students will be able to implement fundamental knowledge and skills according to each of the following roles of the teacher: Facilitator of learning Interpreter and designer of learning programmes Leader, administrator and manager Specialist in certain learning areas and Assessor.

7 Students receive the ACE with 128 credits on NQF level 6. A student who has successfully completed the ACE can apply for entry to the HonsBEd programme. DURATION Most ACE specialisations have a minimum duration of one (1) year. The maximum duration for these specialisations is a period of two years. The maximum duration for ACE specialisations offered over two years, is a period of three years. Such specialisations include the ACE in Mathematical literacy and the ACE in Mathematics EDUCATION (GET). (A-rules:A9) 4 CONTACT SESSIONS The North-West University provides each student with the opportunity to attend at least nine (9) contact sessions per semester. Students who attended these contact sessions experience remarkable improvements in marks and are well prepared for examinations.

8 During these sessions you will meet with relevant, academic professionals who will give you advice on your assignments, feedback regarding completed assignments and academic guidance through your study material. You will also have the opportunity to work in groups with your fellow students. It is very important that you come well-prepared to a contact session. Contact sessions are presented on Fridays or Saturdays. The contact sessions take place at registered STUDY CENTRES. Students can also write exams at the study centre but must indicate this well in advance. Venues, times and dates: See list of Study Centres and Semester Off-campus Planner below. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU ATTEND CONTACT SESSIONS AT THE VENUE YOU HAVE INDICATED, SINCE PROVISION WILL ONLY BE MADE FOR YOU AT THAT CENTRE.
