4 Flight arose out of consultation with educators who had been using the Framework since its initial release in 2014. Flight is generally defined as the movement of flying through the air. It might also conjure images of a journey up and away. Flight calls forth the notion of a young bird taking flight, or a flock of birds flying together. Words associated with flight like flying, soaring, gliding, lifting, wheeling, circling, darting, flitting, fluttering, and whirling symbolized, for us as authors, the innovative, playful and creative trajectories, and often unpredictable lines of flight in our work with young children. Early in the development of the curriculum Framework , the metaphor of Canada geese flying in V-formation, was used to illustrate how Early adopters of the Framework took a lead and helped others make progress, as they moved forward and upward together.

5 Not unlike Canada geese, the many people involved in the development of the Framework and the more recent research, have moved in and out of various roles leaders, supporters, committed followers; collaborating, negotiating, debating and imagining how an Early Learning and care curriculum Framework can elevate and strengthen our profession. On our journey to rename the Framework , we learned that the bird chosen as the Flight logo, a Great Horned Owl, was selected by children as Alberta s provincial bird. As well, some Alberta communities hold the owl as a symbol of wisdom and strength. As writers of the Framework , we think children, as mighty learners and citizens of Early childhood communities, reflect the notion of greatness, wisdom and strength as well.

6 One might ask, why would we rename the Framework now. Feedback from educators using the Framework , tells us the long descriptive name has been cumbersome. Many have shortened, Play, Participation, and Possibilities: An Early Learning and Child care Curriculum Framework for Alberta to PPP or variations of the curriculum , the Framework or CF for short. However, many educators have confirmed our initial assumptions, that the words, play , participation , possibilities are significant for the Early childhood work they do each and every day. These significant words will remain on the cover of the Framework as reminders of the important role they hold in young children s curriculum.

7 It is timely that the Framework is renamed, now that educators have had opportunity to work with it in short to test their wings and fly. Like many of the educators who have inspired Flight: Alberta s Early Learning and care Framework , we think it represents the brilliant, imaginative, fluid and organic work that is representative of children s everyday curriculum. It encourages reflectivity and freedom of thought, and inspires growth, change and innovation bringing us all together toward a shared goal nurturing Alberta s children as mighty learners and citizens to take flight. Naming Alberta s Curriculum FrameworkvFlight: Alberta s Early Learning and care Framework is the result of the collaborative effort of many.
