2 This enormous transcription project has been completed with the help of the University of New Orleans and the Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies. These institutions provided the internship and funding to complete the transcription process. Why are there so many different regiment groups? Major General andrew jackson had to cobble together a fighting force made up of whoever he could find to defend New Orleans against Great Britain. Because New Orleans is located at the mouth of the Mississippi River, it provided an ideal target for the British to attack and attempt to capture. The nation that controlled the ports at the end of the river controlled the trade of the United States with the rest of the world. The British were on their way to New Orleans in December of 1814 and General andrew jackson raced to intercept them. In a very short period of time and with a limited number of enlisted men, Major General andrew jackson had to recruit a fighting force from all social classes, races, and backgrounds.

3 He was forced to request assistance from every able bodied man in the area, including privateers, Cherokee Indians, and free men of color. All of these varied groups, including militia and volunteers from Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi and Louisiana, fought together under jackson s command. Due to the emergency situation and the brief periods of service of most volunteers, accurate records of those who fought in the battle were not kept. The lists we have today have been cobbled together from several sources and may be incomplete, inaccurate, or repetitious in some instances. What can I do with this list? Visitors to the Battlefield often request information on the soldiers, militia and volunteers who fought under Major General andrew jackson during the various battles fought in the New Orleans area during December1814 and January 1815. They often inquire whether their ancestors fought in the American campaign against the British at New Orleans.

4 They believe that their ancestors participated in the battle and seek more information on jackson s troops. Having a name is often the first step to deeper research. The National Park Service would like to assist visitors in learning more about the participants at the Battle of New Orleans and whether their ancestors took part in the engagements. Please type a name into the search bar and see if he pops up on our list.
