In addition you can view on one page the last time each of your ships dialed-in or view the messages waiting in the queue for the ships to dial in and delete them if required. This feature is especially useful if, for example, a ship has been in port for several days and there are several out of date weather reports waiting for collection. You can remove these from the queue, thus saving the airtime. Message Rules amos Connect Online allows you to decide who can and can t send messages to your vessels. For those who can send, you decide how big these messages can be. However, amos Connect Online allows you to do much more.

2 For example, you can allow the messages but remove the attachments, or you can decide that the messages should first go to you for authorization (Redirect), or you can choose to be copied or notified when messages are received. Furthermore, you can allow different rules and limits for each mailbox on board. As an example, 5MB for the Master s mailbox compared to 20KB for crew. Setting up messaging rules The easiest and simplest way to use rules is to create 3 rules: 1. A default Deny rule with a size limit of eg 1,024KB. This is your basic rule which will stop ALL messages above 1,024KB, unless you make other more specific rules. Details of how to create a default rule can be found in section Default Rule 2. Then make an Allow rule for originators who can send messages bigger than the default rule. See section Whitelist 3. Finally, make a Deny rule for originators who can only send messages smaller than the default rule.

3 See section Blacklist For details on more complex actions, like copying messages, removing attachments etc. please see section Complex rules. If you decide to make any of these more complex rules, please refer to section Advanced Users Default Rule Firstly we recommend that you set up a general size limit. This rule will then apply to all messages received unless another more specific rule applies. In the following example we have set up a general size limit of 1megbyte (shown as 1,024KB). Page 2 of 6 amos Connect Online guide Created on 15-12-2003 14:18 After pressing Save rule you will return to the list of rules and can see the rule showing the text: Whitelist Sometimes I need to send some large updates of up to 5 megabytes. This I know will be expensive so I will only allow these files from my office and private email addresses. I will make a rule called Kevin allow for this, which looks like this: Page 3 of 6 amos Connect Online guide Created on 15-12-2003 14:18 After pressing Save Rule I can now see both of my rules.

4 Blacklist Next I want to completely block messages from 2 organizations YYY and ZZZ so make a rule called Blacklist . As I want to blacklist ALL people at these companies, I can use the wildcard * . The rule entry screen looks like this: Page 4 of 6 amos Connect Online guide Created on 15-12-2003 14:18 After pressing Save Rule I can now see all of my rules. Note, if I also want to add Company XXX to my blacklist rule, I click the edit button (far left of the rule) and add it to the rule. Complex rules Next I want to set up a more complicated rule. I want to allow Xantic support department to be able to send messages of up to 50KB to the Master only, without file attachments and I want a copy of the messages. The entry screen will look like this: Page 5 of 6 amos Connect Online guide Created on 15-12-2003 14:18 After pressing Save Rule I can now see all of my rules.

5 Finally, you will note that these rules apply only to the ship sale44 . If I want these rules to apply to all my ships I can do this by selecting the rules I want to apply (below you can see that I have selected 2) and press Promote . After this, my rules look like: Page 6 of 6 amos Connect Online guide Created on 15-12-2003 14:18 As you can see, 2 of the rules are for Post Office ID Sale44 and 2 apply to all . If I look at the rules for another PO, these two all rules will appear there as well. Advanced Users As you can imagine, if you set up a large number of complex rules, an email originator may appear in more than one rule (for example you may have one with and one with The basic rule is that the more detailed rule (in this case will apply. Also, you need to know that a rule will only be applied to rules which match the criteria of a rule.))

6 For example, the only rule against a remote is as follows: Rule 1 - Allow messages smaller than 50KB from and copy to and sends a message of 100KB. This message will be allowed but no copy will be sent. This is because the message is bigger than 50KB and so does not meet the criteria smaller than 50KB and therefore it is not copied. It was probably your intention that this message should have failed. If that was what you wanted, you should also create a deny rule. Rule 1 - Deny messages Rule 2 - Allow messages smaller than 50KB from and copy to What we advise when making rules is that you add your own test email address to the list of from addresses and send a message to the ship s email address to verify the results. If the message goes to the ships s mailbox, you can of course immediately remove it.
