Most indexed persons were graduates, but family members of graduates are also included if mentioned in the listing. The graduating classes covered in this resource are 1852-1876. About the Buffalo Female Academy: The Buffalo Female Academy, founded in 1851, is still in existence today and called the Buffalo Seminary. It is a college preparatory school for girls. Coverage: The death date range covered is 1/1/1932-6/28/1950. About the News Almanac: This publication includes death dates of prominent Buffalonians. Information which may also be listed is age, profession, and accomplishments. PenR annual report of the Commissioners of the Erie County Penitentiary to the Board of Supervisors of the County of Erie Buffalo HV8378 .E8 A2 Indexing: Vital statistics in physician's reports were indexed. Headings were also scanned for mentions of births/ Deaths /marriages. Only reported vital statistics that named individuals were indexed. Most indexed persons were prisoners, but some prison officials, volunteers, and workers may be included.

5 The dates indexed were 1859-1898. The following dates were either not published or not held by BECPL and therefore not indexed: 1865, 1872-1875, 1877-1882, 1884, 1886, 1895, and 1896. Most report years ran from October 1 - September 30. Examine the reports: Be sure to examine the pages cited in this publication. Other details that may be found about individuals indexed in this source include cause of death, ethnicity, as well as other information. Other details: This source indicates that prisoners in this penitentiary were committed by Erie County government agencies as well as some agencies outside of Erie County. Lists of these agencies, as well as the number of people committed by agency are often given in the reports. Many details about prison life may be learned including labor performed, activities, daily rations, inmate demographics, and prison inventories.

An effort to report family ties was made by indexing family member names when relationships were stated. Wives first names were often not given. In these cases they were indexed under Mrs. Identifying information such as age and residence was also recorded. Coverage: These reports are for the Buffalo Police Department. Years covered are 1873 1914. A few volumes had missing pages. Examine the reports: Be sure to examine the pages cited in this publication. Examining the listings may give further detail including but not limited to cause of death, career information of police officers, and details about homicides.

Maiden and married names were often given on the lists. Those who were married were usually listed with their husband s first and last names. Place of residence were generally included. About the Seminaria: The Seminaria is the Buffalo Seminary s (formerly Buffalo Female Academy) yearbook. The Buffalo Seminary is a college preparatory school for girls. Only named individuals were indexed (including partial names Mrs. Smith vs. Mrs. Ann Smith). Individuals related to the deceased were indexed if the relationship was stated. Individuals thought to be related to the deceased were also indexed ( if personal effects were given to someone with the same last name). Coverage: The following dates were indexed: 1870-1871, 1873-1878,1881-1914. Examine the proceedings: Be sure to examine the pages cited in this publication. Most listings state the date of the coroner s inquest or personal effects and to whom they were given. Other information that may be found includes named relatives, date of death, cause of death, and full obituaries.
