Contact Information299 Annual Report and Accounts 2016 20176 WelcomeNorth Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust is a successful forward thinking provider of integrated acute and community based healthcare to around 400,000 people living in Hartlepool, Stockton-On-Tees and East Durham and surrounding areas including Sedgefield, Peterlee and Easington. It provides services from two main hospitals; the University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton on Tees and the University Hospital of Hartlepool and provides a number of outpatient and outreach clinics at our smaller community hospital in Peterlee, and in an increasing number of community locations. The breast and bowel screening services extend further, across Teesside and parts of North Yorkshire and County Durham.

The Trust also provides community dental services to the whole of Teesside and many of the other community services also reach out beyond its geographical boundaries. The Trust s skilled staff provide a minor injuries service at One Life Hartlepool and services in other community settings. The Trust is very proud of its staff, who are passionate about providing excellent care for patients and 1 April 2017 the Trust in alliance with North East Ambulance Services (NEAS) and the local GP Federation, will be delivering Integrated Urgent and Emergency Care services. The Urgent Care Centres incorporate minor injuries and illnesses, GP services and emergency care practices at both hospital sites, with Accident & Emergency delivered from North Tees teamAnnual Report and Accounts 2016 20177I am delighted to introduce this Annual Report which is the Trust s opportunity to look back at what has been achieved during the year and place on record the enormous amount of work that has gone on in the interest of patients.

It s fair to say it never gets easier and quite rightly the standards get higher, the levels of performance get tougher and the financial challenges become even greater. As an organisation we continuously rise to the challenges that face us and as well as the business as usual, we continue to invest, innovate, look forward and plan in the interests of those we past year has been very challenging for the majority of acute trusts in England particularly within a national context of rising demand for services, increased performance standards and continued financial pressures. We were no exception and the Trust has risen well to the challenges and overall this has been another positive year. Quality remains our top priority, despite being in a challenging financial climate; we are not prepared as a trust to compromise the performance and quality our patients have come to expect.

We are continuing to see changes across the whole of the NHS. These changes are necessary to meet the needs of the 400,000 people we serve in Stockton, Hartlepool and County Durham. We are making progress in developing our clinical services in a variety of ways, the board is cognisant of the changing landscape of the NHS and are committed to the value of partnership planning to deliver robust and joined up services for the future in line with the Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP). As well as reported challenges, we also have to be proud of our accident and emergency performance, our responsiveness and waiting times; our support for communities; and most importantly of all our patient satisfaction has been good.

A great amount of hard work has been put in over the last year from our staff, who are constantly making improvements in the interest of our patients. Following a formal bidding process, we were delighted to be chosen to deliver integrated urgent care services across Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees in alliance with Hartlepool and Stockton Health (the local GP Federation) and the North East Ambulance Service. The service commenced on 1 April 2017 and will ensure patients are seen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by the right person in the right exciting new programme which started this year was Scan4 Safety. We are one of six trusts in the country to have been selected as a demonstrator site to implement new standards as part of the government s eProcurement strategy.

It will involve the scanning of barcodes to track patient records, staff and products and will greatly improve patient care. The Trust is being recognised both nationally and internationally for the work it is doing on this project with the Chief Executive and Head of Pharmacy both attending events to talk about and promote the Scan4 Safety been granted a 25m investment to carry out essential infrastructure work, to give the University Hospital of North Tees a longer life, essential work to build a new energy centre is underway, the changes are needed to ensure we continue to meet the future needs of our Clinical Services year saw Macmillan cancer information centres opening at our two main hospital sites.

With the official launch held at North Tees where a plaque was unveiled in memory of former director of nursing, patient safety and quality, Cath Siddle who sadly passed away in 2016. The centres offer valuable support, information and guidance to people affected by cancer and are staffed by two cancer information specialists funded by the charity Macmillan Cancer Support along with Trust is hosting a new joint Tees-wide breast service with South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, meaning that all Teesside patients will be seen at the University Hospital of North Tees for their diagnostic tests, with clinics jointly provided by staff from both Chairman s StatementAnnual Report and Accounts 2016 20178We continue to invest in our workforce for the future and were rated top of the rankings for the highest overall satisfaction in core general surgery training in the country and in the top 10 for every other indicator, the only trust to do this.

Staff continued to demonstrate their talent and innovation locally and nationally as is demonstrated in the awards and accolades section of the Report , with a number of award winners and shortlisted entries this year. This year saw the appointment of a Volunteer Coordinator who will be working with service areas across the Trust to increase volunteer numbers, providing opportunities for volunteers to be involved and support a range of activities in the Trust, playing a key role in providing a positive and enhanced patient foreword to this Annual Report would not be complete without thanking our dedicated and talented staff. Over 5,000 people work at the Trust, delivering services to the local community, which continue to be safe, and of high quality despite increasing pressures throughout the NHS.
