2 ButHamish McNab, a young person in Australia, believes I m wrong. If his email to meabout the article is any indication, he s right: it s well-reasoned and beautifullywritten. Here are his comments:I am a high school student in Australia, studyinglinguistics in year 11. I believe that technology is notthe main reason forthe decline inEnglish, but ratherthings such as whateducation providesin schoolsnowadays, and thecontact that peoplehave withliterature,especiallystudents. I am nota particularlybright student, anddo not jump at thechance to readbooks, but I havebeen lead to believe that it is more what our educationprovides and not the technology that surrounds off, English in schools is loosing its touch on thebasics.

3 Grammar is barely mentioned as a major part oflearning, and the teaching of proper use grammar andpunctuation is deteriorating. As I am still in high school,it is easy to say that I have been taught little, if notnone at all, about the uses of English in grammar is left down to self-correctionafter a neatly constructed essay has been viscouslyattacked by a red pen. I believe that grammar, punctuationand spelling should be taught in English in schools, nomatter the groans that follow it's mention. It is for thegood of our ever evolving, ever changing beautifullanguage, and should be considered important, as it is thebasis of , this is a reflection on me as well as my peers, Ihave noticed that the connection between people and properliterature - such as books, and literary masterpieces - haslessened somewhat.

4 People are reading less and less thesedays, mainly due to the busy life styles they lead.
