AP Computer Science Principles Summer Assignment Objective: Complete a practice Explore Performance Task. Rationale: This Assignment is excellent practice for the real task, which you are required to complete by April 30th regardless of if you take the AP exam. It will also introduce you to several of the topics we will discuss in class! Time Commitment: The project should take approximately 8 hours to complete. Completion Requirements: Select a computing innovation (from the provided list) and research it. Create a computational artifact that illustrates, represents, or explains the computing innovation s intended purpose, its function, or its effect. Provide written responses to each of the given prompts. Cite at least three sources. At least two sources must be recent and have been created after the end of May 2017. In-text citations should be included throughout your written responses when necessary.

Suggested Timeline: Hour Suggested Activity Date Completed 1 Complete rapid research and decide which computing innovation you plan on using. See next page for your options. Use the Explore PT Planning Organizer to help organize information you find. 2 - 3 Research and draft responses to prompts 2c and 2d. 4 - 6 Create the computational artifact. Draft response to prompt 2a. 7 Complete response to prompt 2b. Complete 2e references. Make sure you have sources cited for any fact or claim in 2a, 2c, and 2d (both in 2e and in-text). 8 Review all submission materials. Check your responses against the rubric. Submit your project to Submission: You must submit your Computational Artifact (PDF, WMV, MP4, MP3, or URL) and Written Responses (PDF) by August 1st to You will receive a response from Mrs. Kerr when she receives the project. Do not assume you have successfully submitted the project unless you receive a confirmation e-mail!

! Questions? Do not hesitate to e-mail Mrs. Kerr at Please understand that it might take me several days to respond due to school not being in session. I recommend not procrastinating the Assignment and I should be able to respond in plenty of time. AP Computer Science Principles Summer Assignment Computing Innovation A computing innovation is defined as something that has had or has the potential to have significant beneficial and harmful effects on society, economy, or culture; consumes produces and/or transforms data; and raises at least one data storage concern, data privacy concern, or data security concern. For this Assignment , please select from one of the following computing innovations: Self-Driving Car Bitcoin Spotify Facial Recognition Software Voice Controlled Speakers (Alexa, Google Home, etc.) Computational Artifact A computational artifact is defined as a visualization, a graphic, a video, a program, or an audio recording that students create using a Computer .

O The following are some resources for creating a Computational Artifact: Powtoon Prezzi Canva PicCollage Splice iMovie You must be able to save your Computational Artifact as a PDF, WMV, MP4, or MP3 file. Audio and video files will most likely be too large to submit via e-mail and will need to be uploaded and sent to Mrs. Kerr using a URL. Written Responses There are 4 prompts (2A, 2B, 2C, & 2D) that you are required to respond to. Take a look at the information on the following pages to get a more detailed description of each prompt. Written responses must be submitted in a PDF. References You must cite at least three sources that helped you create your computational artifact and/or written responses. At least two sources must be recent and have been created after the end of May 2017. And at least two sources must be available online or in print (your third source can be a personal interview with an expert in the field).

You must include in-text citations throughout your written responses when necessary. When you do the actual Explore PT you will be required to choose your own computing innovation. These are just a few resources students have used in the past! Feel free to use any software, website, word processor that you are comfortable with! AP Computer Science Principles Summer Assignment AP Computer Science Principles Summer Assignment 2a. Provide information on your computing innovation and computational artifact. Name the computing innovation that is represented by your computational artifact. Describe the computing innovation s intended purpose and function. Describe how your computational artifact illustrates, represents, or explains the computing innovation s intended purpose, its function, or its effect. (Must not exceed 100 words) Use these prompts to help draft your response.

Keep this response SHORT. Option 1: One paragraph Four total sentences. Name of computing innovation Purpose of the computing innovation o The goal or objective that the innovation is designed to accomplish. Function of computing innovation o How the innovation accomplishes the purpose. Purpose of the computational artifact o How does your computational artifact speak to or clarify the purpose or function of your computing innovation. Option 2: Respond in complete sentences (except first bullet). Keep as a bulleted list. Name of innovation: Purpose (what the innovation was designed to accomplish): Function (how the innovation accomplishes its purpose): Computational Artifact Purpose (how the artifact represents the purpose or function): AP Computer Science Principles Summer Assignment 2b. Describe your development process, explicitly identifying the computing tools and techniques you used to create your artifact.

Your description must be detailed enough so that a person unfamiliar with the tools and techniques will understand your process. (Must not exceed 100 words) This response is NOT scored. However, it is used to prove you created your own artifact and cite your sources. Option 1: One paragraph Four total sentences. Computing tools used to create the artifact. Describe techniques used with computing tools in creating artifact. Describe/explain the development process that includes the techniques and computing tools for creating the artifact. Option 2: Respond in complete sentences (except first bullet). Keep as a bulleted list. Tools Used: o What did you use to make the artifact (ex: iMovie, camera, Word, website, etc.). Quick Summary of Process: o How did you use the tools stated above. Essentially, you are proving that you created the artifact and not submitting someone else s work.

Cite Sources in Computation Artifact: o Any images, diagrams, or information that appears in your artifact that you yourself did not create should be included. AP Computer Science Principles Summer Assignment 2c. Explain at least one beneficial effect and at least one harmful effect the computing innovation has had, or has the potential to have, on society, economy, or culture. (Approximately 250 words) Use these prompts to help draft your response. Do not forget to provide in-text citations. Option 1: Two paragraphs Beneficial Effect: o Who s Impacted: o Society/Economy/Culture and How: Explicitly state This effect benefits society/economy/culture Harmful Effect: o Who s Impacted: o Society/Economy/Culture and How: Explicitly state This effect is harmful to society/economy/culture Option 2: Respond in complete sentences.

Keep as a bulleted list. Describe/explain beneficial effect(s)s of computing innovation: Describe/explain harmful effect(s) of computing innovation: Explain/describe (clearly & explicitly) either a beneficial OR harmful effect that the computing innovation has had or the potential to have on one of the following: Society: Economy: Culture: AP Computer Science Principles Summer Assignment 2d. Using specific details, describe: The data your innovation uses. How the innovation consumes (as input), produces (as output), and/or transforms data. At least one data storage concern, data privacy concern, or data security concern directly related to the computing innovation. (Approximately 250 words) Use these prompts to help draft your response. Do not forget to provide in-text citations. Option 1: Two paragraphs The data the innovation uses o Find a technical aspect.

Use the rubric as a guide. o How/what does it compute (something like: It takes this ____ data, does this ____ to produce ___) A security/privacy/storage concern Option 2: Respond in complete sentences. Keep as a bulleted list. o Identify the specific data used by the computing innovation: o Explain/describe how the computing innovation: consumes the data (input): transforms the data: produces the data (output): o Identify at least one data storage, data privacy, or data security concern. Explain/describe/justify the concern and how it is related to the computing innovation: Data storage concern: Data privacy concern: o Data security concern: AP Computer Science Principles Summer Assignment 2e. Provide a list of at least three online or print sources used to create your computational artifact and/or support your responses through in-text citation to the prompts provided in this performance task.
