2 It has been a good year for the Diaconate Community in our Archdio-cese. In fact it has been a really good year. On February 3, 2007 the Archbishop ordained 38 holy and hum-ble men to the Diaconate bringing our numbers up to 406 deacons who are incardinated in Galveston-Houston . According to the USCCB we have the second largest number of active deacons of all the dioceses in the United States, and for that matter, in the world. The only diocese that has more deacons than Galveston-Houston is Chicago. The Archbishop has also approved starting a new Diaconate formation program every 2 years. We started a new class in January, 2007 and have plans to start another one in January, 2009. However, right now we have a problem. We are not getting enough good men to apply to the Diaconate to have 2 classes going simultaneously. But you can help in this.

3 Did you know that you do not have to wait for your pastor to nominate a person to the Diaconate , you can nominate a person. In fact I am asking every deacon in the arch-diocese to nominate a person that you feel would be a good candidate for the Diaconate , a man who you think has a deacon s heart. We conduct a Deacon Information Night to learn about the Diaconate in our archdio-cese every 3 months. All the Deacon Admission Team needs is more people to interview for selection. You can get the Deacon Inquiry Nomination Form from your Deanery Representative or email me and I will send it as an attachment. Your help in promoting Diaconate vocations is greatly appreciated. And the last thing for now - please don t forget that our Annual Deacon Convocation is on Saturday, August 11th. Speakers this year will be Archbishop Daniel DiNardo and Dcn. James Keating coauthor of the Deacon Reader.

4 You should see a flyer within a week. But please don t forget to email Deborah Ladet at or call her at 713-659-5461 to make a reservation. Diaconate Personnel Board AnnouncementsDiaconate Personnel Board AnnouncementsDiaconate Personnel Board AnnouncementsDiaconate Personnel Board Announcements The National Directory requires that the Archdiocese establish a program of ongoing formation for deacons. This program of on-going formation is in addition to time allocated for an annual spiritual retreat or diaconal Community retreat . Distance learning courses from approved institutions are mentioned in the National Directory as a possible means of fulfilling the on-going formation requirement. Deacons are required to complete 18 hours of continuing education each fiscal year. (Continued on Page 3) Ongoing Formation In his first address specifically to permanent deacons, Benedict XVI encouraged them to proclaim the truth with charity, responding in particular to "new forms of poverty.

10 " The Pope received some 90 permanent deacons of the Diocese of Rome to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the re-establishment of this ministry in this Church, following the decision made by the Second Vatican Council. In his address Saturday, the Holy Father said: "In these years new forms of poverty have emerged: Many people, in fact, have lost the meaning of life and do not have a truth on which to build their own experience. Many young people ask to meet men who are able to listen to them and counsel them on the difficulties of life." "Together with material poverty, we are also faced with spiritual and cultural poverty," the Pope added, thanking the deacons for the work they do in Rome, particularly in the pastoral baptismal and family programs. Be "deacons of Truth that makes one free, and you will lead the inhabitants of this city to an encounter with Jesus Christ," he exhorted.
