3 John s Gospel we read about the church in the first generation. This book is not intended to be a complete history, but is meant to be about the way in which Jesus Christ our Lord continued His work in the world after His ascension into heaven. It tells us the catholic church of every generation where we came from, why we exist, and what our relationship to God as Christ s church is and must continue to be. Today s first reading is part of a somewhat longer passage from scripture. Cornelius had a vision in which God told him to contact St. Peter. He did so, Peter came to his home, and then preached Christ s message. The Holy Spirit came upon them, and then they were baptized. It is all seen as the action of the Holy Spirit. This tells us a number of things. First, that the Holy Spirit and His work is central to the life and work of the catholic church . As individuals and as a church we must be open and responsive to the Holy Spirit.

4 Secondly, that we are to be a missionary church concerned primarily about conversion and ongoing conversion. We exist to help people become believers, to help them come to Christ, and enable them to become part of the church . In the New Testament, no Christianity exists apart from the church . We are believers together, not just individually. None of us is sufficient alone. And thirdly, that although we do much of the work, it is primarily God who makes it possible. The Acts of the Apostles has sometimes been called The Gospel of the Holy Spirit. This means that each parish exists to help people come to Christ and to become more deeply converted to Christ. Any parish that does not do this is not what God intends a parish to be. We need to always remember this for the life and ministry of this parish. We must be Christ-living, Christ-centered, Spirit-filled and primarily centered on making converts in and through all of our programs and activities, especially (but no only) child, youth and adult education.

5 In the second reading, St. John calls us to make Christ-like love central in our lives. This means our individual lives and our parish life as well. The more we live in love, the more Christ is present and the Holy Spirit is at work. In the Gospel, Our Lord continues last Sunday s message. Not only are we to be united to Him, but we are to bear fruit that will remain. This takes place through prayer, receiving the sacraments and participating in Mass, studying our Faith, and living as Christians should. We are friends, not slaves. Our Lord loves us deeply. We are expected to love each other just as deeply not just by saying I love you but by helping each other in healthy, practical and effective ways. Love isn t so much about giving people what they want as it is about helping people become what they should be.
