NATIONAL 5 COMPUTING SCIENCE COURSE ASSESSMENT TWO UNITS Unit 1 Information Systems Design & Development Databases & Web Design Sept 2014 Unit 2 Software Design and Development Programming & Hardware / Systems Nov 2014 At the end of each unit is an assessment which consists of both practical and theory under supervision in class. COURSEWORK This element contributes towards 40% of the overall grade - the software development environment is Visual Basic 6 Pupils begin coursework in January. Marked internally but verified externally. FINAL EXAM Theory exam contributes towards 60% of the overall grade. Resources issued to N5 COMPUTING SCIENCE pupils Course notes for all topics incorporating homework Free access to GLOW BrightRed Study Guide N5 COMPUTING SCIENCE book to aid with revision and homework (issued after October week) School network and all software are accessible from home through CC4 Anywhere via the secure log-in tab on the school s website.

2 SQA Past / Specimen Papers for N5 COMPUTING SCIENCE Although students will be issued with examples of past paper questions, we would recommend that students have their own copy of SQA past / specimen papers to aid their revision, these are available to download from the SQA website; Homework Homework is issued on a weekly basis - reinforcing the understanding of topics covered in class and developing strategies to answer exam questions. Letters will be issued if homework is returned late, to an unsatisfactory standard or not submitted. Supported Study Supported study will be offered in February / March.
