A Bonus Resource forSeeing Jesus in the Old TestamentLysa TerKeurst and Joel MuddamalleBefore We Get StartedHi friend,We are so excited to have you with us for the Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament study . Over the next several weeks, we re going to walk side by side with you to identify some of the places in the Bible that are full of Jesus presence but that we may have missed Before . As believers, we can often think about Jesus as only appearing in the New Testament. In modern day, we celebrate His birth as we study His life here on earth, and we remember His death, resurrection and ascension as major parts of our faith. All of these things are incredibly important for us to recognize and understand. But what if there are other pivotal pieces we ve been overlooking?

What if the Old Testament holds so much more about the story and character of Jesus than we ever realized?Yes, this study holds such rich truths and revelations that will point us not only to where Jesus shows up all throughout Scripture but also where He is present in the details of our lives today. Before we get Started , we want to be sure that you have a place to prepare for what s ahead. Use this resource as a starting place to see the connection between Old Testament verses and New Testament verses. We think you will be absolutely fascinated by the fact that the Bible is one cohesive story, and the connection point that knits it all together is Jesus. So if we miss Jesus, we actually miss the point of the whole story. If you have questions along this journey, make sure to write them down!

We feel confident that, by the end of this study , you ll be equipped to look for answers and see Jesus every step of the way like never Before . Many blessings,LYSA TERKEURSTJOEL MUDDAMALLEAs we began to research and write this study alongside our team at Proverbs 31 Ministries, the word compass came up a lot. You ll even see us process through this more in the pages of Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament. But we believe it s so important for the discussion at hand. If you ve ever been on a camping trip in a remote area, lost access to your GPS or even needed to know which direction you were heading in your car, you know that having a compass (even a digital one) is crucial. Especially when you aren t sure where you re going.

Or when things start feeling a little upside-down or turned around. You need something solid. Something true. Something that provides direction. Otherwise .. you re lost. If you ve ever felt this way spiritually, or even a little aimless when you open your Bible, let s dig into this concept a bit more together. Wouldn t it be nice to have a compass to help us make sense of the larger story of Scripture inside all the details, facts, timelines, laws and characters? Many scholars and theologians have tried to determine a compass for God s Word, trying to find the center of Scripture. There are several different themes through which we could process the events of the Old Testament. Themes like covenant, kingdom, law versus grace, or even the while all of these themes are evident and have Jesus in mind, what we really need is something to be our true see, that s why Jesus must be our compass as we read and process Scripture.

He is the true north that never do we know this? Jesus Himself says so. In Luke 24:13-34 Jesus joins two disciples who are on a walk to the town of Emmaus. But be-fore we get to the conversation between Jesus and the disciples, let s unpack the historical context of Luke 24. When we tune into this story, three days have passed since Jesus was crucified and hung on the cross as a traitor and rebel. The dreams of the Israelites who thought Jesus was the long-awaited king who would lib-erate them from Roman oppression are utter-ly shattered. Hope is dead and buried just like the body of Jesus. Or so they think. On the third day, Jesus defeats death and claims vic-tory over sin. The tomb is empty, and Jesus is alive. And on this day, according to Luke 24:13, Cleopas and his friend start a 7-mile walk to Emmaus from Jerusalem.

What do friends do on walks? Talk about life and for them, the topic of conversation is the death of Central Theme of Scripture We re pretty confident that Jesus had a great sense of humor. As Jesus walks alongside them, He sees that Cleopas and his friend are not only in the middle of a discussion, but the discussion has turned into a dispute. (Luke 24:17) Jesus asks them what they are talking (arguing) about, and in verse 18, Cleopas says, Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days? Now, why do we say Jesus had a sense of hu-mor? Because He responds to the anxiety, confusion and what seems to be a little bit of a heated moment: What things?

(Luke 24:19a). Cleopas replies by telling Jesus of their shattered hope and their confusion over the testimony of the empty tomb. But Jesus lets these two disciples know that their hope has not been shattered. In fact, the suffering, pain and spilled blood on the cross was neces-sary! But Jesus doesn t stop there. He proves the necessity by turning to the Old Testa-ment, the Hebrew Scriptures, and beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concern-ing himself (Luke 24:27). Jesus is very intentional with what He says to these disciples. He starts with Moses and then goes to the Prophets. Moses wrote the first five books of the Old Testament, called the Pentateuch Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Prophets make up some of the last books of the Hebrew Bible Hosea through how, earlier, we learned the journey from Jerusalem to Emmaus was 7 miles?

Consider this: It takes an average person 17 minutes to walk 1 mile. Yes, we know all you fitness buffs and runners could do it much faster, but just take a leisurely walk with the rest of us on this one! So a 17-minute mile, over 7 miles, would take about 119 minutes or fewer than two hours. Friend, in fewer than two hours, Jesus shows these disciples how the entire Old Testament is connected to His life, death, burial, resurrection and ascension. The entire Old Testament is a testament of hope, and hope is not an abstract, impersonal truth. Hope is personal, and hope has a name Jesus is essentially saying to these men is that the central theme and message of the Scriptures is about Himself. So how does that apply to us today?

Well, if we miss Jesus in the Old Testament, we will end up missing the point of the whole narrative. Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament awakens our eyes and creates a deep longing and anticipation in our hearts for the fulfillment of the promise of God to restore, reunite and redeem His creation. Jesus is the center of this story and each of our stories. Jesus is the compass that shows us the way. Jesus is the guide to help us see the great story of God throughout the pages of Scripture. And this is why Jesus must be the theme of this entire we journey through this study together, we want you to be able to make connections as you identify Jesus in every part of the Bible, from the Old Testament to the New Testament.

Recognizing His faithful presence in Scripture provides evidence that He s completely trustworthy and available in our circumstances as well. In the space below, look up the Old Testament and New Testament verses to see the correlation between the two as they point to Jesus. Then write out any observations or similar words/phrases that appear in both. Some of these ties may be through numbers or details in the verses that provide similarities between the story of another Bible character and Jesus. READ GENESIS 1:1 AND JOHN 1:1-5. Write out your observations and any connections you see:What do these verses say about creation and who was involved? Notice in the John passage that God the Father was not alone. READ GENESIS 3:21 AND HEBREWS 9:22. Write out your observations and any connections you see:Making Connections Why do you think God chose to cover Adam and Eve with animal skins, (Genesis 3:21) and what act had to be done in order to provide the skins?
