3 Depending on the particular needs of yourparticipants, you may find you want to focus moreattention on one area, such as setting goals to reacha healthy weight. You can use the Web links in the appendix of theCommunity Workshops materials to find additionalhandouts, tools, and resources that meet the needsof your : if you have PowerPoint access, you may want to show the Portion Distortion Quiz (https:// ) as a visual presentation on how food portions have changed. The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA+) is an8-week program that can be added to the workshopseries. PALA+ empowers participants to selectphysical activity and healthy eating goals each week,and those who complete the challenge can earna certificate of achievement from the President sCouncil on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition ( ).Eat Healthy Be Active | Workshop Series Page 7 best Practices FOR Implementation MOTIVATING PARTICIPANTS TO ATTEND WORKSHOP SESSIONS Give Workshop Reminders Collect email addresses or phone numbers eitherbefore or at the first workshop to provide remindersof upcoming workshops.

4 Consider creating an online calendar to notifyparticipants of upcoming Workshop Incentives If you are able, offer participants an incentive tocome to each workshop, or the entire series of six. Provide items that help participants apply workshopconcepts such as pedometers, reusable waterbottles, or stretch bands for muscle strengtheningactivities. If you have larger items such as a cookbook, a giftcertificate to a grocery store, or a kitchen tool,consider holding a raffle at the end of the workshopseries. For each workshop participants attend, theyreceive a raffle ticket, and the more raffle ticketsthey have at the end of the series, the more likelythey are to win the prize!Take Steps to Motivate Participants If participants already know one another, suggestthat they buddy up to help motivate one anotherto try the tips at the end of each workshop and toremind one another of upcoming workshop sessions.

5 To excite participants about the next workshop,at the end of each class, give participants a fewhighlights about what will be discussed and remindthem of the Things to try at home listed at the endof each TIMING AND ANSWERING QUESTIONS Each workshop was designed to be completed inapproximately 60 minutes, including time for a fewquestions and answers during or at the end of theworkshop. If you are teaching a larger group with manyquestions, you may find you need more than 60minutes to complete the the Time You Spend Answering Questions Answer a few questions during the class but bringindex cards for people to write down any questionsthat you don t have time to address. Then, spend afew extra minutes during the beginning of the nextworkshop to answer these questions. This can beespecially helpful if there is a question you need tolook up more information to answer. If you have some extra time, consider staying afterthe class to address any lingering questions askedduring the workshop.

6 Change the layout of chairs so participants aren tsitting too close together. Chairs that are closetogether may encourage more side conversations orquestions during class and you may need to spendsome time keeping everyone Healthy Be Active | Workshop Series Page 8 best Practices FOR Implementation ENHANCING STRETCH BREAKS AND MUSCLE STRENGTHENING ACTIVITIES Consider playing music during the stretch breaks andmuscle strengthening activitiesEnhance the Stretch Breaks The stretch break will come approximately halfwaythrough the class. You may find it helpful to include this as anopportunity for everyone to get up and move around. If there are distracted participants, this can also bean opportunity to restart the class after the the Muscle Strengthening Activities If you are bringing canned soup or other cannedgoods for participants to use during workshop 6, givethe cans to the participants to keep.

7 Suggest that they keep the two cans at their deskat work or somewhere close at home as remindersto do the exercises. Suggest also that they keep aprinted copy of the exercises close TESTING Many of the workshops include taste testing to allowparticipants to try some new foods or foods they donot frequently eat. Participants at pilot testing sites really enjoyed tryingnew foods, so you are encouraged to include theseactivities when you are teaching the workshops. Please be mindful of participants with food you are bringing in packaged items, be sure tobring in the container so that participants can checkthe ingredients list if Test the Slow Cooker Recipe For the slow cooker recipe, you may want to prepareit ahead of time and bring it to class to taste test. If you are able to, also demo the recipe in class soparticipants can taste the food and see exactly howit is prepared.

8 Keep in mind that if you start the slow cooker to cookduring the workshop, it will not be finished beforethe end of CLASS To show your appreciation, make the last classa celebration of the group s participation in theCommunity Workshops. You may choose to try a new recipe or bring in adifferent food to taste : One instructor made yogurt parfaits withyogurt and fruit for everyone. Don t forget to award every participant with acertificate of completion.
