Safe operation andtop performance can be obtained only withproper operation and following symbols in this manual alert you to po-tential hazards to the operator, service person andequipment. Alerts you to an immediate hazardwhich will result in severe personal injury Alerts you to a hazard or unsafepractice which can result in severe personal in-jury or Alerts you to a hazard or unsafepractice which can result in personal injury orequipment , fuel, exhaust, moving parts and batteriespresent hazards which can result in severe personalinjury or PRECAUTIONS Keep ABC fire extinguishers handy.

Make sure all fasteners are secure and torquedproperly. Keep the genset and its compartment oil and oily rags can catch fire. Dirt andgear stowed in the compartment can restrictcooling air. Before working on the genset, disconnect thenegative (-) battery cable at the battery to pre-vent starting. Use caution when making adjustments whilethe genset is running hot, moving or electri-cally live parts can cause severe personal inju-ry or death. Used engine oil has been identified by somestate and federal agencies as causing canceror reproductive toxicity. Do not ingest, inhale, orcontact used oil or its vapors. Benzene and lead in some gasolines havebeen identified by some state and federalagencies as causing cancer or reproductivetoxicity. Do not ingest, inhale or contact gaso-line or its vapors. Do not work on the genset when mentally orphysically fatigued or after consuming alcoholor drugs. Carefully follow all applicable local, state andfederal VOLTAGE IS DEADLY!

Generator output connections must be madeby a qualified electrician in accordance with ap-plicable codes. The genset must not be connected to the publicutility or any other source of electrical could lead to electrocution of utilityworkers, damage to equipment and fire. An ap-proved switching device must be used to pre-vent interconnections. Use caution when working on live electricalequipment. Remove jewelry, make sure cloth-ing and shoes are dry and stand on a dry wood-en platform on the ground or IS FLAMMABLE AND EXPLOSIVE Keep flames, cigarettes, sparks, pilot lights, electrical arc-producing equipment andswitches and all other sources of ignition wellaway from areas where fuel fumes are presentand areas sharing ventilation. Fuel lines must be secured, free of leaks andseparated or shielded from electrical wiring. Use approved non-conductive flexible fuelhose for fuel connections at the EXHAUST IS DEADLY!

Learn the symptoms of carbon monoxide poi-soning in this manual . Never sleep in the vehicle while the genset isrunning unless the vehicle has a working car-bon monoxide detector. The exhaust system must be installed in accor-dance with the genset Installation manual . Do not use engine cooling air to heat the vehicleinterior. Make sure there is ample fresh air when operat-ing the genset in a confined PARTS CAN CAUSE SEVEREPERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry near mov-ing parts such as PTO shafts, fans, belts andpulleys. Keep hands away from moving parts. Keep guards in place over fans, belts, pulleys, GAS IS EXPLOSIVE Wear safety glasses and do not smoke whileservicing batteries. When disconnecting or reconnecting batterycables, always disconnect the negative (-) bat-tery cable first and reconnect it last to THIS MANUALThis manual covers the operation and maintenanceof the the Marquis BGM and NHM series of gener-ator sets (gensets).

Study this manual carefully andobserve all of its instructions and Locations, Starting and Stopping, Pow-ering Equipment and Varying Operating Conditionscover basic operation of the genset. Periodic Main-tenance and Troubleshooting cover the mainte-nance and care necessary for top performance. Theowner is responsible for maintaining the genset ac-cording to the maintenance schedule (Table 4 onpage 14).This manual also covers genset break-in, exerciseand storage, how to obtain service, genset specifi-cations and important information for Californiagenset operator of the genset should become thor-oughly familiar with the information in this this manual and the genset Installation Manu-al with the other vehicle IDENTIFICATIONWhen contacting an Onan dealer or distributor forparts, service or product information, be ready toprovide the model and serial numbers on the gensetnameplate (Figure 1). Every character in thesenumbers is significant.

(The last character of themodel number is the specification letter, which is im-portant for obtaining the right parts.)To make the model and serial numbers easy to findwhen you need them, record them in the boxes pro-vided in Figure ccA953123456 RECORD NUMBERS HEREMODEL NUMBER:SERIAL NUMBER:NAMEPLATE WITH TYPICAL MODEL ANDSERIAL NUMBER DATA7 NHM-FA/26105 FFIGURE 1. TYPICAL NAMEPLATEM arquis is a trademark of the Onan RECOMMENDATIONSWARNING Gasoline and LPG are highly flam-mable fuels and can cause severe personal inju-ry or death. Do not smoke if you smell gas orgasoline or are near fuel tanks or fuel-burningequipment or are in an area sharing ventilationwith such equipment. Keep flames, sparks, pilotlights, electrical arcs and arc-producing equip-ment and all other sources of ignition well a type ABC fire extinguisher in the ModelsUse clean, fresh unleaded gasoline having a mini-mum octane rating (Anti-Knock Index) of some times of the year only mandated oxy-genated gasolines may be available.

These are ac-ceptable for use, but not preferable. Leaded gaso-line may be used but will result in the extra mainte-nance required for removing combustion chamberand spark plug deposits. Do not use gasoline orgasoline additives (de-icers) containing methanolbecause methanol can be corrosive to fuel Do not use gasoline or gasoline ad-ditives containing methanol because methanolcan be corrosive to fuel system using highly leaded gasolines and leadadditives because of the extra engine mainte-nance that will be ModelsUse clean, fresh HD-5 grade liquified petroleum gasor equivalent product consisting of at least 90 per-cent propane. Commercial liquified petroleum gasfuels may contain more than percent butanewhich can result in poor fuel vaporization and poorengine starting in low ambient temperatures (below32 F (0 C).Satisfactory performance requires that the LPG va-por (vapor-withdrawal models only) be supplied at apressure within the range indicated in High LPG supply pressure (vaporwithdrawal models only) can cause gas leakswhich can lead to fire and severe personal injuryor death.)

LPG supply pressure must be adjustedto Specifications by qualified OIL RECOMMENDATIONSUse premium quality motor oil. Look for the API(American Petroleum Institute) classification anduse Class SG or SH oil (also SG/CD, SG/CE, SH/CD or SH/CE). Also look for the SAE (Society of Au-tomotive Engineers) viscosity grade. Referring toTable 1, choose the viscosity grade appropriate forthe ambient temperatures expected during the peri-od of time until the next scheduled oil SAE 30 oil is preferable when temper-atures are consistently above freezing. Multigradeoils are better when wide temperature variations 1. OIL VISCOSITY VS.
