Some general remarks about BIM - Docia is BIM Docia A/S was founded in 1997 by a group of individuals from the AEC market sector with many years of experience in the design and construction of buildings. We regard ourselves as a company with a European domestic market. However, by virtue of our web solutions, we recognise that our market is a global one. BIM is a global trend and we are experiencing the same challenges in the United States, Europe, and Asia etc. as those on the Danish agenda. In recent years huge amounts of time and resources have been used on BIM. 2 Today, there is a growing need to understand and support BIM and Cobie. Therefore, both Docia and the industry as a whole have to take many different issues into account. Both focus strongly on collaboration in the AEC sector, comparing it to the supply chain theory in the car industry. The creation of successful project teams requires the capacity to work across organisations and professions. BIM requires more equal-footed, inter-organisational collaboration than any current internal process-management tools can handle. They do not have the capacity to deal with processes, information and tasks, which cut across the various organisations involved in the creation of a building.
3 So, if one disregards collaboration, BIM is just an isolated nucleus, which does not yield its full value for the entire project team. 5 Countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom have used government resources to develop a standard, which benefits every member of a team, at every stage from design to realisation. Americans talk about BIM, BAM and BOOM (Building Information Model, Building Assembly Model and Building Operation Optimization Model). But whatever one calls it, it does not alter the fact that the different professions and project teams involved need to be able to collaborate and share project material in a clever way, and ensure that the form of the material can be applied. It is hard to believe that the industry is already capable of realising a construction project simply according to a 3D model.

The emergence of BIM The term BIM is relatively new, and in recent years it has become a strong, highly popular concept. Depending on how you define BIM, its origin can be traced back to the 1980s and systems such as ArchiCAD 3D, which could accommodate various parameters in 3D models. Technology and the increasing level of information, together with the spread of 3D visualisation, have created the context for a popular interpretation of the term "BIM", on the basis of previous concepts like 3D modelling, Virtual Building etc.

It is precisely this focus on process, rather than on visualisation alone, which places new demands on cross-organisational opportunities for cooperation and the sharing of information, which BIM by itself cannot yet provide. BIM is now about people and processes. That means that BIM also calls for changes in working methods and, in terms of teamwork, demands that all the information given in a model can be displayed and disseminated intelligently to the project team.
9 So the BIM concept is not only about enriching a model with information and knowledge. Perhaps far more importantly it is about how this knowledge can be shared with the relevant stakeholders. No single flexible technology is available for this process. Fully collaborative BIM involves interaction between many technologies, which are operated by many different organisations in a complex supply chain. In this respect we believe that Docia is an essential part of the infrastructure, because, all things being equal, the information given in the model must be made available in a format, according to which the industry can realise an asset, and distributed in an intelligent way. This is the very cornerstone of Docia Project. 10 Exorbitant amounts of money and resources are used on implementing live model servers in various IT environments, typically in the form of expensive hosting facilities, proxy caching facilities etc. This gives you the possibility for a fantastically well-coordinated model, which irons out clashes, and in which all design decisions are confirmed according to an iterative principle and composition in accordance with many component models. The essential 2D drawings are exported from here to a website, specifically designed for the actual, further design and realisation, along with reliable documentation and communication in a controlled and precise form. For a contractor, the alternative of seeking information in a BIM model alone is infeasible, as is the alternative to the professional extranet, where a huge quantity of material is uploaded in a more or less structured way, on a random FTP.
