1 DA072011 . SPL Service free Product . Service /TECHNICAL. DATE: 9/8/2011. TO: All Service & Part Departments. Dana Corporation's Commercial Vehicle Systems Group has developed a Service free (SF) version of their current SPL170 7 SPL250 series of Product . This new Service free Product is intended to support all class 7 & 8 applications in the commercial vehicle and off highway market. This Product will eliminate the need to grease the drivelines during the life of the Product , saving maintenance expenses. All Service free products must be applied as per the Spicer application guidelines /.

2 Requirements. These new drivelines will not require any change to the Driveline installation procedure at the OEM plant. A typical Service free driveshaft assembly part number will have a SF ( Service free ). designated at the beginning of the driveshaft part number. As per examples listed below. The new Service free Product will not have a grease zerk in the cross so it will not be possible to grease the U-Joint. Note: Coverage under Dana's warranty requires that the Product be applied in a manner consistent with Dana's application guidelines. The new Service free Product will be available from Dana Australia during the third quarter of this year (2011).

3 Spicer Service Parts Dana Holding Corporation Aftermarket / Service Impact: Dana will also offer a Service free (SF) version of the current SPL U-Joint kits. These Service kits will contain a premium synthetic grease that Should be Used during the installation of the replacement kits. The new kits will also contain SF in the base part number. As per examples below. Torque and Installation Information There is a revision to the torque specification for the SPL Product line and it is listed below (The upper torque limit has been lowered from 135 LB. FT. to 125 LB FT.). For maximum performance the torque specifications listed above and the torque sequence (Illustration below) should be followed during installation.

This Product is Service free in that greasing of the drivelines is not needed during the products use. Dana recommends that the U-Joints and driveshafts be inspected for wear and damage every time the vehicle is serviced. This includes any unscheduled and / or scheduled maintenance that occurs within the vehicles maintenance intervals. 5 Generally, they include: vehicle maintenance and inspection, universal joint operating angles, environmental factors (contamination), torsional and inertial vibration levels, driveshaft speed, torque and load. Any one or a combination of these factors can result in a Driveline failure. A failure usually begins in the universal joint bearing assembly with a breakdown of the bearing surfaces. Any of the above factors can lead to a progressive vibration, heat, breakdown of lubricant, and in some cases breakage of the U-Joint which can result in separation of the Driveline from the vehicle.
