2 SUMMARY OF REVISIONSThis document is substantially revised and must be completely reviewed. This revision incorporates IC 2004-1. This IC incorporates all approved officer classification changesimplemented 30 April 2004. Specifically, Officer Change Summary and Conversion Guide (CS&CG)provides a summary and conversion table with instructions for all AFSC changes, mergers, additions,realignments, and deletions of classification identifiers that have been approved since 31 October 2003and implemented 30 April 2004 (Attachment 1). Major changes include: merging airlift and tanker pilotand navigator specialties into a newly established mobility pilot and navigator specialties (AFSCs11 MXX, Mobility Pilot and 12XX, Mobility Navigator), establishing a Fighter Pilot, IFF (AFSCs11 FXQ) identifier to replace the Trainer Pilot, AFSCs 11 KXE specialty, revising the specialty qualifica-tions for the Control and Recovery Specialty (AFSCs 13DX), and revising the specialty description forWeather (15WX).

This MANUAL contains the Change Summary and Conversion Guide (Attachment 1), OfficerClassification Structure Chart (Attachment 2), Prefixes (Attachment 3), Reporting Identifiers(Attachment 4), Special Duty Identifiers (Attachment 5), Air FORCE specialty descriptions (Attach-ment 6 - Attachment 46), List of Officer AFSCs Authorized for Use Without Shredouts (Attach-ment 47), and Officer Special Experience Identifiers (Attachment 48). The descriptions and codesidentify different types of jobs, and qualifications needed to fill them and succeed in an AFS. Thesestandards help classify and assign officers, develop programs for training and professional develop-ment, and structure unit manpower documents. AFI 36-2101, Classifying Military Personnel (Officers and Airmen), provides guidance to awardand withdraw officer classification codes.

6 Personnel and manpower procedures are in afman36 -2622, volume 1, Personnel Data Systems User MANUAL and AFI 38-201, Determining ManpowerRequirements, respectively. 2. Classification Structure Identifiers. Air FORCE Specialty (AFS). An AFS is a basic grouping of positions requiring similar skills andqualifications. Specialties are then grouped into utilization fields and career areas based on similarityand transferability of skills and knowledge. This structure allows officer use in related career areasand for career development. Attachment 2, Officer Classification Structure Chart, shows the overallofficer classification structure. AFS Shredouts. A letter suffix to an AFSC identifies specific equipment, functions, or specializa-tion within an AFS. Special Duty Identifiers (SDI). SDIs identify duties and responsibilities not clearly within a spe-cific career area. SDI descriptions and codes are in Attachment 5.

7 Reporting Identifiers (RI). RIs identify people or positions that cannot be identified elsewhere inthe classification system. RI codes are in Attachment 4. Prefixes. A letter prefix identifies significant skills not restricted to a single AFSC. Attachment3 lists authorized prefixes, explains their use, and identifies AFSCs with which they may be used. Special Experience Identifiers (SEI). SEIs identify special experience and training not otherwiseidentifiable in the classification system. Attachment 48 explains the alphanumeric structure of officerSEIs, the authorized activity codes, and experience sets that combine to form the SEIs. 3. Specialty Description Explanation. Specialty descriptions consist of: Heading. Includes AFSCs (entry-XXX1, intermediate-XXX2, qualified-XXX3, andstaff-XXX4), specialty title, and the last date the specialty description changed. If a shredout isauthorized, an asterisk is printed after the AFSC.

8 Specialty Summary. The specialty summary provides a concise overview of the scope and char-acteristics of the specialty. Included is the related Department of Defense (DoD) occupational codefrom the DoD Occupational Conversion MANUAL that lists similar jobs from each military service andcivil service. 6 afman36 -2105 30 APRIL Duties and Responsibilities: Describes representative duties and responsibilities of the specialty without attempting toinclude all aspects of all jobs in the specialty. Excluded are duties that are inherent for all officers who command or supervise personnelregardless of specialty. These include morale, welfare, safety, individual performance evaluation,career management, coaching, and disciplinary action. Do not cite duties or responsibilities asso-ciated with command in any specialty descriptions other than commander special duty identifiersor specialties. Below group level, identify commanders and their positions with prefix C affixed toa functional AFSC ( C36P3).

9 Utilization field introductions include responsibilities common to all specialties in the fieldand, when appropriate, opportunities to command within the functional specialties of the field. Specialty Qualifications. Establishes job qualification standards for effective only mandatory standards except for education, which may be desirable. List desirablequalifications in the Officer Professional Development (OPD) guide for the specific must meet mandatory qualifications to perform in the specialty. Include only entry,upgrade, or for retention qualifications. Qualification standards may consist of: Knowledge. Factual understanding and practical military skills required to perform atthe qualified level. Education. Specific academic subjects or disciplines, or courses of study required ordesired to succeed in the specialty. Mandatory education requirements are to enter the spe-cialty. Training. Military courses training for or contributing directly to effective perfor-mance.

10 Mandatory courses must be completed for upgrade. Professional military educationcourses are desirable for all officers and are not included unless mandatory for the specialty. Experience. Experience performing specialty duties needed for upgrade to the quali-fied level. Breadth of experience is described and a minimum length of time performing dutiesmay be specified. An individual's supervisor must recommend upgrade, certify the individualmeets all requirements of the specialty, and has shown ability to perform at the qualified level. Other. Measurable qualifications, such as physical standards, security clearances,aeronautical ratings, certifications, and licenses, required to perform in the specialty. Qualifi-cations stated as mandatory pertain to upgrade unless otherwise specified. Specialty Shredouts. Specifies shredouts authorized with the AFSC: letter suffix identifiers, andthe title or portion of the specialty to which shredout is related.
