1 CHINESE THERAPEUTIC ACTIONS1. Greatly Tonifies Yuan(Source) QiQi deficiency or depletion, fading pulse:Yuan(source)qiis the basis of all qi in the Shen(RadixGinseng) is the best herb to strengthen the body andrestore vitality. It tonifies deficiency and restores the col-lapse ofyuan qi, that may have become depleted afterprofuse perspiration, after excessive loss of fluids insevere vomiting or diarrhea, with excessive loss of blood,or due to other chronic illnesses. Clinical manifestationsof such conditions include shallow respiration, shortnessof breath, cold extremities, and feeble or barely palpablepulse.

2 In those conditions, this herb can be used alone togreatly tonify and revitalize the body. Qi deficiency isoften accompanied by yang deficiency, and qi collapse isoften accompanied by yang collapse. As such, when treat-ing cases of deficiency or collapse, interior-warming oryang-tonic herbs are usually added to Ren Shen. Collapse ofyuan(source) qi: use Ren Shenas a single-herb remedy. Qi and yang deficiencies with profuse perspiration andcold extremities: use it with Fu Zi (Radix AconitiLateralis Praeparata).Exemplar Formula:Shen Fu Tang( ginseng and Prepared Aconite Decoction).
