2 Course objectives: By the end of the course students will be able to: Explain the three main challenges behind the design of machine vision systems. Describe the general processes of Image acquisition, storage, enhancement, segmentation, representation, and description. Implement filtering and enhancement algorithms for monochrome as well as color images using MATLAB. 4 Visual pattern recognition (19) CAP 4401 Digital Image Processing Spring 2015 Syllabus MATLAB access This course is MATLAB- oriented and you are expected to have frequent access to a computer running MATLAB and some of its toolboxes (notably, the IPT - - Image Processing Toolbox) for your assignments and projects. Here are some options to consider: 1. Purchase your own copy of the student version of MATLAB. It costs $99, is fully functional, and comes with several toolboxes, including the IPT. 5 Use FAU's MATLAB licenses. Follow the instructions posted on and send TSG (the College of Engineering and Computer Science s Technical Services Group) a help ticket if you run into any difficulties. 3. Consider a free alternative to MATLAB. The two most popular are GNU Octave ( ) and SciLab ( ), which contains at least two Image Processing toolboxes ( ). I have used both of them and I know they are "work in progress" and are not 100% compatible with MATLAB and its IPT. So please use them at your own risk.

6 Assessment summary: Five (5) MATLAB- based hands- on assignments (5 x 10%): 50% Exam: 20% Term project (MATLAB code + report): 30% Policy for Late Assignments Late assignments will be graded with a penalty of 10% of the grade for each day after the assignment s due date, up to a maximum of 3 days late ( , 30% penalty), beyond which the assignment will receive a grade 0 (zero). Testing Policy Assignments and term project materials will be submitted electronically via Blackboard.

7 The exam will be assigned online and should be solved and submitted (in a similar way to assignment submission) within 48 hours. It is an open book exam: students are allowed to use any resources they need (book, web sites, videos), but are not allowed to collaborate among each other. Please plan appropriately. If a problem occurs, it is essential you take immediate action to document the issue so your instructor can verify and take appropriate action to resolve the problem. Please take the following steps when a problem occurs: 1. If you can, make a Print Screen of the monitor when the problem occurs.

Complete a Help Desk ticket at Make sure you complete the form entirely and give a full description of your problem so the Help Desk staff will have the pertinent information in order to assist you properly. This includes: a. Select Blackboard (Faculty) for the Ticket Type. b. Enter the Course ID. c. In the Summary/Additional Details section, include your operating system, browser, and Internet service provider (ISP). d. Attach the Print Screen file, if available.

10 3. Send an email to your instructor to notify him of the problem. Include all pertinent information of the incident (2b- d above). 4. If you do not have access to a computer, call your instructor with all pertinent information of the incident. If he is not available, make sure you leave a detailed message. 5. If you do not hear back from the Help Desk or your instructor within a timely manner (48 hours), it is your responsibility to follow up with the appropriate person until a resolution is obtained.
