They may as well use the reports compiled by district MODERATION INSTRUMENTS Learning area recording sheets/ mark schedules School MODERATION tool (first level) Cluster MODERATION tool Cluster MODERATION reporting tool Cluster MODERATION register District MODERATION reporting tool Learner portfolio cover sheet 26 11. EXEMPLAR OF A NATURAL SCIENCE: PROJECTPROJECT: Energy challenges and : Energy and ChangeCritical Outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 Learning Outcomes: LO1, LO2 and LO3 LO1: AS: Plan an investigation, conduct the investigation, collect information, and communicate findings.

LO2: AS: Recall information, categorize and interpret relevant information, application of the knowledge gained. LO3: AS: Sustainable use of alternative sources of energy. Purpose:Review and extend knowledge and skills related to the theme on Energy. In this project learners will: Write a report on alternative sources of energy and how they can be utilized for the development of their community and relief of poverty. Demonstrate skills of using different forms of communications. Make a toy / model to demonstrate the conversion of energy. Investigate the economical and environmental impact of energy utilization at local, national and international levels. 27 TASK LIST Activity Assessment Criteria Assessment Activity: 1 Brainstorm the following and present the findings using a mind map.

The different types of energy used in your community The sources of these different forms of energy The challenges involved in generating and utilizing these energies The impact the mechanisms of producing these energies on the environment Importance of sustainable use of energy Sources Mind map must include: Types, sources, challenges such as availability, economic, sustainability, accessibility to wider community, etc. Impact should include pollution, deforestation, etc. Efficient and wise utilization. Need for alternate sources of energy Teacher Activity: 2 The following are alternative sources of energy (Nuclear Power, Sun, Wind, Waves, Geothermal Energy, Bio-fuels, etc.) Select, in your group, any one of the above mentioned alternative energy sources.

Step1 Develop a list of questions that would assist you to investigate the selected source of energy e. g: what Teacher 28is nuclear energy, how, what impact, etc. (Your questions must reflect the challenges.) Use any resources to find the answers to your questions. Step 2 Give a feedback of your findings using a report/ article/ poster, etc. The feedback should also reflect the relationship between the utilization of alternative sources of energy and the development of the community and poverty alleviation. Step 3 ConservationDesign a series of questions/activities to further investigate issues/challenges that you have identified in relation to sustainable use of energy. Step4 Give the findings of your investigation to the class using any form of communication method (poster, verbal, video etc) to inform the class on the findings and the new knowledge gained.

Questions must be clear, logical, meaningful, and challenging. References:newspaper, magazines, textbooks Internet, etc. Report must include: the type of energy, ways of generating, utilization and environmental impact, economical impact on the community Questions must be clear, relevant, logical, meaningful, and challenging. New information/ recent development, wise management of resources EXPANDED OPPORTUNITY1. Generating different forms of energySelect two forms of energy that we commonly use and investigate the ways of generating this energy. 29 Discuss the impact of the production of these two forms of energy locally, nationally and internationally. Use any of the following presentation modes: poster, oral, written, role play, debate etc. 2. Conversion of EnergyMake a model /toy to demonstrate the conversion of energy.

Explain the mechanism by which your model works. Assessment of oral presentationPresentation skill Levels 1 2 3 4 5 Could I hear the speaker? Did the speaker look at us? Did the speaker use body language to support his talk? Did the speaker keep to the time limit? Did the speaker use any visual aids to support the talk? Was the talk logical and easy to follow? ContentWas there enough information? Was the information relevant and helpful? 30 Was the talk suitable for the grade? Was the content easy or too difficult to follow? Assessment of posterLay out of the heading large and clear Sub-headings large and clear Size of print large enough to read from far Levels 1 2 3 4 5 Information on posterHave the main points been summarized on the poster? Can I understand the information?

Is the information presented in an interesting way? Is the information organized in logical way so that it is easy to follow? Attractiveness of the poster Is colour used effectively? Does the poster look attractive? 31 ASSESSMENT OF WRITTEN REPORT LayoutHeading Separated into paragraphs Font size Number of pages ContentIntroduction Main idea Accuracy of information Logical presentation Conclusion 3212.
