1 CHAPTER2 THE PREPARATION OFSAMPLESFOR preparationof polishedsurfacesfree fromscratches, fromthermalandmechanicalmodificationofth esamplesu rface,andfromreliefis essentialfortheexamination,identificatio n,andtexturalinterpretationof pre-paredonmanytypesofmaterials withrelativelylittle effortusinga widevarietyofmechanicalandmanualprocedur es. However, oresamplesoftenpresentproblemsbecausethe y mayconsistofsoft, malleablesulfidesor evennativemetals intimatelyintergrownwithhard,andsometime sbrittle, sili-cates,carbonates, oxides, orothersulfides. Weatheringmay co mplicate theproblembyremovingcementsandinterstiti almineralsandbyleavingsa m-ples thatarefriableorporous. Delicatevug fillings alsocauseproblems withtheiropenvo idspacesandpoorlysupportedcrystals. Alloysandbeneficiationproductspresentthe irowndifficultiesbecauseofthe presenceofadmixedphasesofvariablepropert iesandfinegrainsizes. In thischapter,thegeneralproceduresofsample selectionandtrimming, casting, grinding,andpolish-ing(and,inspecialcase s,etching)requiredtopreparesolid or particulatesamplesforexaminationwith the ,andalsopolishedanddoubly polishedthinsec-tions,whichareusefulin thestudyoftranslucentorcoexistingopaquea ndtranslucentspecimens,is described.
