1 MEDIA RELEASE 15/5/2016 Child Protection Redesign Today's announcement is an important step forward in establishing a sustainable and much more proactive response to Tasmanian children and their families who need extra support, the Commissioner for children , Mark Morrissey said. Mr Morrissey was commenting on the Government s $20 million which helps to underpin the Safe Families, Strong Kids report. Mr Morrissey said Professor Maria Harries and the cross Agency working group have provided the Tasmanian Government with a report, that if fully implemented has the potential to transform Child Protection in Tasmania. A coordinated government service model, a statewide Child Wellbeing Plan and a restructure of the current Child Protection Service into smaller Child safety units are all commendable initiatives which will benefit vulnerable children . "Protecting and supporting our most needy children is a serious and important responsibility.

2 This plan has the potential to provide a range of responses which will help to ensure each Child receives a much more holistic approach to their care," Mr Morrissey said. He said the additional staff working in Child Protection services are also to be welcomed. "This is an exciting time for the future of Child Protection in Tasmania." He said he welcomed the proposed establishment of the Advice and Referral Service which would help to provide coordinated support to children and their families. This would also give children and their families more input into their interactions with the new service. "It is essential that children and young people s views are taken into account when decisions are made about them, and this is a matter that I will particularly focus on during the implementation process." Mr Morrissey said he was currently developing an annual report on Child health and wellbeing in Tasmania, which will include important information on children and young people.

3 This report would add an additional element of oversight and support for these children . He said he is fully committed to supporting the ongoing Redesign of Child Protection .
