2 The Collegiate Nurse Educator s of G reater K ansas City (CNE) and Kansas City Area Nur se Executives (KCANE) established a joi nt Task Force i n 1994 to explor e i ssues of common concern and int erest, i ncluding the impact of t hese changes on nursing education and practice. One major a rea of concern whi ch impacted both nursing education and the practice setting was faculty and student competency and Orientation required in the Clinical s etting . The practice of i ndividual c linical partner Orientation and documentation requirements was costly in terms of both time and money.

3 Consequently, t he joi nt T ask Force developed both a generic Clinical Orientation agreement and an Orientation handbook. The agreement includes a description of a ssumptions regardi ng faculty and staff rol es in clini cal education, documentation and record keeping requirements f or f aculty and students, as well as Clinical partner specifi c and faculty Orientation expectations. The Orientation handbook i s a generic Orientation based on The Joi nt C ommission on Accreditation of H ealthcare Organizations (Joi nt Commission), Occupational Safety and Health Admini stration (OSHA) and Medicare regul ations and recommendations from the Association of Professional I nf ection Control ( APIC) for f aculty use with students.

4 This manual does not take the place of any policies or procedures of a specific institution. Students and faculty are expected to follow the policies and procedures of the institution where Clinical activities are occurring. This handbook is designed to be used at t he beginning of t he Clinical education pr og ram with review and retesti ng for competency on an annual basis thereafter. Student s and faculty are expected to demonstrate 90% competency annually prior t o Clinical experiences. Test r esults will be kept on file at the nursing pr og ram. Thi s document w ill be updated on an annual basis.

5 The Greater K ansas C ity Area N ur se Executives will suggest r evisions to the Chair of t he Collegiate Nurse Educator s of G reater K ansas C ity. It w ill be the responsibility of each Clinical partner to assure t hat updated versions of t he document a re being used by those prog rams who are not members of C ollegiate Nurse Educator s. Thi s joi nt endeavor i nv ol ving education and practice w ill prov ide multiple benefits i n terms of educational, staff, and clerical time and costs and Joi nt C ommission competency documentation. In addition, by m ini mizing time spent on Orientation , students will have mor e time at t he bedside to prepare for t he workfor ce.
