Theme Notes Series 253: Communication Page 3 of 11 MAKE AND DO Hand paintings You will need: Coloured paint Paper Use your hands and fingers to make lots of different prints. Turn the prints into animals and objects. Some examples are below: A Fish To make a fish, stick out your thumb and little finger and hold the rest of your fingers close together.

4 In this position, press your hand in some paint and then onto a piece of paper to make a print. Your thumb and little finger are your fish s fins, the rest of your fingers are its tail and your palm is its body! Dip another finger into a different coloured paint and dab on an eye. A Caterpillar To make a caterpillar, dip your knuckles in some paint and roll them onto a piece of paper. Make two knuckle prints in a row for a wriggly caterpillar body. Add lots of little spots for legs and one large spot for a head. 6 Stick to the front of the juice container for a propeller. Cut a large rectangle from cardboard, about 10cm x 40cm. Ask an adult to make two identical slits near the front of the container, slightly wider than the rectangle. Push the rectangle through the slits to form two wings. Cut a small rectangle from cardboard, about 4cm x 8cm. Ask an adult to make another slit, on top and to the back of the container. Stick the rectangle in the slit to form a rudder. Cut a final rectangle from cardboard, about 2cm x 6cm. Ask an adult to make another slit at the end of the container and push in the rectangle to form a tail. Place stickers along each side of the container for passenger windows. How to Make Raita and Pappadams You will need: 1 cup natural yoghurt 1 clove of garlic, crushed 1 cucumber, chopped Paprika Pappadams Add garlic and cucumber to yoghurt and mix to combine.

7 Sprinkle with paprika. Cook pappadams as per packet instructions and serve with raita. Theme Notes Series 253: Communication Page 7 of 11 MAKE AND DO How to Make a Bucket Drum and Tissue Box Guitar Drum You will need: Bucket Baking paper Safety scissors Rubber bands Cut out a large square of baking paper, big enough to cover the top of the bucket. Stretch the baking paper over the top of the bucket and secure with a rubber band. Tap on the drum with your hands to make a beat! Guitar You will need: Recycled tissue box Wooden spoon Stretch four rubber bands around the tissue box lengthways for strings. Thread the wooden spoon through the rubber bands at the back of the box for the neck of your guitar. Strum the rubber bands and see what sound they make! 9 Make a door knob sign to hang on your bedroom door. Use a long piece of cardboard with a hole cut near the top to fit over the handle. Decorate in your own style to let people know who sleeps in this room. Make some yoghurt pot telephones from two pots and a long piece of string. Pierce a hole in the bottom of each pot and tie a piece of string between them. Pull the string tight and talk to a friend in one phone as they listen in the other.
