1 Communion and Offering Meditation Development A study by Dr. Harley Ihm Communion : Establishing the Purpose of Communion to focus our thoughts: Jesus Introduction of the Lord s Supper: Matthew 26:26-30; Mark 14:22-26; Luke 22:17-21 Jesus is celebrating the Last passover He will share with His disciples. He is about to fulfill the prophecy of the passover . The passover was a shadow of the hand of God on His people. Question What new idea does Jesus explain to the Apostles at this last passover Meal? 1. He gave thanks to God for the bread. 2. He told the disciples to take and eat the bread; the bread was His body.

3. He gave thanks to God for the cup. 4. He told the disciples to drink the cup; it was His blood , the blood of the New Covenant. It was the blood that was poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 5. They concluded with a hymn, a song of direct address to God. 6. Luke adds that Jesus said, This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of Me. Paul s explanation of the Lord s Supper: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Question What teachings on the Lord s Supper did Paul receive from Jesus? 1. Jesus first gave thanks for the bread and broke it. Probably a sign of His broken body.

2. He told the disciples that the bread was His body. 3. He told them to do this, to break bread and eat it to remember Him, His sacrifice. 4. They ate a supper, the passover Meal, then Jesus to the cup and told them the cup was the new covenant in His blood and to drink it to remember Him, His blood poured out. 5. This fulfillment of the passover , this Lord s Supper, was to be done to proclaim His death until He returns. Note: We cannot separate the Lord s Supper from the passover Feast. It was the fulfillment until we eat and drink with our Lord in heaven. Here are the important facts to remember: 1.

The lamb had to be perfect. 2. Not a bone of the lamb was to be broken. 3. The meal was to be taken in haste, quickly eaten. 4. The meal was to be eaten with your cloak tucked in ready to run. 5. The meal was to be eaten completely. 2 6. The blood of the lamb had to be painted on the doorframe of their house, their dwelling place for salvation. 7. Israel could only celebrate when the passover was complete and the death angel passed over and God protected the faithful. 8. The perfect sacrificial lamb was gone so that Israel could live. 9. Jesus is the fulfillment as the Lamb of God who in His perfection takes away the sins of the world.

We take our Lord in haste, completely, and His blood alone can save us when He covers our dwelling place. 10. The Lord s Supper turns our eyes upon Jesus dying in our place on the cross. By His stripes we are healed of our sins that brought us death. God has passed over us because we applied Jesus sacrifice by grace through faith. Steps for Communion devotional Development : 1. Focus on Jesus purpose. Do not get off on tangents. 2. Keep it short. This is not a sermon. 3. Make sure you are connecting the people to the purpose Jesus established. 4. Be creative. If possible paint a vivid picture of remembrance or a memorial.

5. Build a parallel idea. 6. Your role is to make Jesus sacrifice on our behalf clearly the only reason we are doing this. 7. Don t make Jesus passover Memorial trivial. Not a time for humor. 8. Practice, practice, practice so you can deliver this from your heart. Example: I have this ring my father left me. It was his first diamond ring he bought to replace his old wedding band. I had it rebuilt. Every day it reminds me of my dad, all he gave me, all he gave up for me. If I look at it too long I get teary eyes. I can t wait to see my dad again someday, but until then, this ring reminds me of his love and his sacrifice for me.

Transition: When you take the bread that is passed, you might get teary eyed, because it reminds us of the body of our Lord Jesus who willingly laid down His life for you and me. When you take the cup and drink, you may be touched deeply, because you realize that our Lord Jesus allowed His blood to be poured out so we could have grace, forgiveness even though we didn t earn it. Thank You, Jesus. Pray with 3 Offering : Paul s teachings to Corinth on giving: 2 Cor. 8:1-12; 9:6-15 1. Generous giving is a grace from God. 2. Giving in the worst of times brings great joy because God is placed first in your life.

3. We are called to excel in our giving. Be excellent when you give to God s work. 4. Christ s complete giving out of love is a pattern for our giving because of our love. 5. Our gift is acceptable if the wiliness to complete Christ s work motivates our giving. 6. God wants no one to give out of guilt, but only because his heart moves him to give. 7. God loves a cheerful (hilarious) giver. 8. God will empower you to give if your heart is connected to His purpose and plan. 9. Generosity brings blessings and opens doors for greater generosity. 10. Giving is an expression of thankfulness to God.

11. Lives are transformed through our giving as ministry expands. Steps for Offering devotional Development : 1. Focus on the joy of blessing others. 2. Focus on the privilege of participating in building the Kingdom of God on earth now. 3. Keep it short. This also is not a sermon. 4. Short vivid stories are attention grabbers. 5. Never, never, never try to use guilt. That is false teaching. 6. Do not make reference to a budget shortfall. 7. Give them a vision of what can be accomplished through our faithfulness. 8. Express the idea that we are in the business of sharing hope from God.

9. Make it positive. Example: I remember coming home to the old trailer house on the campus of Ozark Christian College. Dana and I just barely made a living with both of us in college. We ate a lot of beans and rice and 5 for a dollar mac and cheese. As I pulled up there it was; a box of groceries sitting on the porch. There s a note from the ladies group back at my little country church home. Just thinking about you and Dana and thought these might be helpful; Milford Christian Church ladies. Talk about bringing up the tears, that did it. They had no idea how badly we needed those.
