With professional guidance from CFVI, the initiative was launched. This multi phase project began with conducting a needs assessment.

A survey was designed to gather basic contact information, leadership profiles, financial data, organizational structure, purpose and developmental needs of non profit Organizations . Agency leaders were then invited to attend focus groups to engage in a dialogue about both their organizational and professional needs. Non profit agency leaders expressed a real need for a Directory of non profit Organizations to be made avail able to the profession for referrals and networking, and to the public to increase awareness of services available. This Directory is a product of the initiative. As a service to donors, CFVI is available to provide comprehensive organizational profiles of Community non profits to effectively guide philanthropic giving. CFVI is committed to connecting donors with identified Community needs.

In addition to their work with the non profit Community , Bart Kavanaugh and Betty Saks are committed to improving the early childhood environment in the Virgin Islands, particularly as it impacts low wage earning families. With assistance from Bart, Betty and other donors, CFVI created a program, The Family Connection, with the mission of strengthening the Community child care and early education infra structure in the Virgin Islands. Now in its seventh year, The Family Connection provides free access to books, toys and resources for child care resources and professional development as well as training programs, networking and resource tools for the territory s hard working child care providers and early education professionals as well as to the parents of young children. For more information about this Directory or The Family Connection, please contact the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands.

8 About CFVI CFVI s Mission The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI) was created to serve both donors and non profit Organizations of the Virgin Islands that want to ensure the highest quality of life for both present and future generations. Its primary goal is to build a growing collection of permanent funds, the income from which will be used to enhance the educational, physical, social, cultural and environmental well being of the islands people. The Foundation, established in 1990, is governed by a board of directors com posed of Community leaders interested in the welfare of the Virgin Islands and is managed by a professional staff. Perhaps you have an area of special interest or concern? Your gift to CFVI can help meet today s needs. And those donors choosing to create a permanently invested fund will empower their gift to grow and meet tomorrow s needs too, thereby becoming a legacy for the territory s future.

How to Establish a Fund at CFVI A named fund may be established by a family, individual or corporation with a gift of $10,000 given once or over five years. The process and the paperwork are straight forward, and donors report that the results are tremendously satisfying. The donor decides the fund s grant making purpose and if the fund principal may be distributed. CFVI works to make your philanthropy worry free. CFVI takes care of grant paperwork, auditing, accounting and reporting. Most importantly, you will have joined hundreds of others who have ensured that their giving will benefit our Community in perpetuity. The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands is a 501 ( c) 3 public charity. Contributions are deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. 9 Please let us know you are out there!
