Respectfully submitted, Lorraine Lapens e First Vice President Thanks to all who organized, volunteered and supported two great recent events at the branch. The Robbie Burns Dinner was well presented, great food, and lots of fun for us, and the audience, as we attempted the Strip the Willow highland dance directed by Brenda Grant.
3 And the Valentines Dinner and Dance, great music, delicious food and loads of love. A few things we have been working on: Space Task Force Gradually getting the storage cupboards sorted. The office reorganization and upgrades have been completed with the help of many hands and advice. Just a couple of odds and ends to sort out. We have come in under budget, leaving the funds needed for painting. Bingo Assistance As you are aware we have been running into some resistance getting volunteers; however, just recently a new member, Alex Osorio, has stepped forward and was trained by Cam Sorgini just this past Sunday. Cam has taken on the job as Assistant Bingo Support Coordinator. He has been able to combine some of the duties with other bingo volunteers to give everyone more breathing space between shifts. You will find Cam working at almost every game should you be interested in joining the team.
4 Leadership Development Workshop Report A workshop was conducted to come up with ideas to get members to take a more active part in the operation and activities of the Branch. 8 Consider becoming a member along with fellow legion members of this great organization and learn about the many facets of Canadian military history. Respectfully submitted, Moira Green Friends of The Canadian War Museum As you may be aware I took a fall and have broken my right arm therefore out of working commission for a while. This too shall pass. Sincere thanks to members and friends who are so kindly helping me out. V-E Day There will be a church parade to commemorate V-E Day on Sunday, May 6, at the 9:15 service at St Paul s Anglican Church, 20 Young Road, off Hazeldean. A reception will be held in Rutter Hall after the service. More details re parade form up to come. Please mark your agenda. A chance to share with our veterans and members within the greater community, to remember the fallen and to offer our thanks for the freedom we enjoy today.
9 Lest We Forget Moira Legion responds to Prime Minister s Comments at Edmonton Town Hall Terrance O'Hearn posted in Royal Canadian Legion District G. February 6 at 12:10pm In a Town Hall recently in Edmonton, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau angered many in the Veteran community when he responded that the Canadian government is still fighting certain Veterans groups in court because they are asking for more than we are able to give right now. These sorts of words are extremely insensitive to Canada s Veterans and reinforce a message that the government does not have an obligation to take care of Canada s ill and injured Veterans - and that Canada cannot afford it. Why then, do we continue to send our forces into harm s way if we are not willing to - or cannot - help them adequately upon return? This is inexcusable. In the Town Hall, the Prime Minister said the revised New Veterans Charter or Pension for Life plan - goes beyond what was offered in the Pension Act, and offers services, rehabilitation and supports to improve quality of life for the Veteran and their families and caregivers.
10 He also clarified that the government cannot return to the amount of money that was given before (through the Pension Act) without accounting for the money invested (in the New Veterans Charter) in services for Veterans. The government s plan for a tax-free pain and suffering award for Veterans is promising, but based on the limited details of the plan released to date, the Royal Canadian Legion strongly believes there are still areas for improvement. The plan must include definitive financial support, along with compensation in the form of services and benefits which together would equal what was offered in the original Pension Act. In addition, the most seriously ill and injured Veterans who cannot generate a comparable income, must receive lifelong financial security. The Royal Canadian Legion is hearing from Veterans who want and need better communication and direction in terms of what the future actually holds for them under this new plan.
