4 Each Deputy should be responsible for no more than to judging Buick Club of America Judging Handbook7th EditionIf a Buick Club of America National or Regional meet orcar show is a judged event, the current BCA National JudgingForms must be used. All National Meets will use the 400 pointjudging forms and it is suggested that they be utilized atRegional Meets. Although judging and awards at NationalMeets are directed toward recognition of excellence of originaland authentically restored Buicks, all members are welcome andinvited to participate and to display their Buicks, whether modifiedor unrestored, at any BCA event. The BCA local club sponsoringthe event may, at its option, provide a separate display area formodified or non-judged Buicks, and may offer awards recognizingsuch participation, which are not BCA National Awards and arenot awarded by BCA judging teams.

5 There is no class separationwithin the display only category of vehicles when the 400point judging system is used at the meet. The forms must beused in their basic state and concept in line with the Peer and 400 point judging form masters, alongwith support and scoring form masters, are available from theBCA Office and should be copied for use at BCA INTRODUCTIONAll judging information contained herein can be adapted toregional and local meets, with the exception of Senior, SeniorPreservation, Archival and Drivers Awards. These special classescan only be awarded at a National handbook is produced for the guidance of both therestorer and the critic of Buick automobiles.

6 It is doubted thatsuch a handbook could ever be complete. Legitimate exceptionsor improvements will be found to the policies and guidelines asstated herein. It is hoped that succeeding editions will becomemore complete, more definitive and more authoritative withadditions and corrections discovered by student restorers andnew research. PHILOSOPHYBCA National Awards are based on how well the vehiclecompares to the original factory product as judged under theBCA 400-point system.

7 The three key items to be consideredin evaluating the vehicle for these awards are authenticity,condition and Gold, Silver and Bronze awards honor those vehiclesthat meet the minimum point requirements as described in theBCA Judging Handbook. Here condition and workmanshipare of prime Senior Award honors those Buicks that most nearlyrepresent the vehicle as it left the factory. For this award,authenticity together with condition and workmanship are ofprimary importance. To assure consistency for this award, withinclasses, between classes and between meets, eleven specific itemsthat are considered most significant regarding authenticity havebeen selected.

8 A vehicle must be correct in these eleven items tomeet the requirements for the Senior Award. In addition, thevehicle must attain a minimum of 390 using this system, BCA provides recognition of a SeniorAward for those members who restore a vehicle to factorycondition. It also provides for those members who choose torestore and/or maintain a vehicle at a level where the car can bedriven regularly. All member s Buicks are still eligible andencouraged to compete for the BCA National Senior, Gold,Silver or Bronze awards, regardless of the authenticity, conditionand workmanship of the car, and for the Archival Award forunrestored HISTORYThe initiation of this formal point judging at BCAN ational Meets began with the adoption of a standardized judgingform comprising a 400 point system in 1989.

9 The first meet inwhich this system was employed was the 1989 National Meetheld in Batavia, New York, hosted by the Finger Lakes to this, beginning with the first National Meet in 1971hosted by Buick Motor Division and the BCA, some meets werejudged, others were unjudged; and of those judged, numeroussystems were GENERAL JUDGING POLICIESThe most general guideline is that all Buicks are to bepresented and evaluated knowledgeably, impartially, consistently,courteously and fairly. This critical evaluation should be aneducational process for both the restorer/owner and the judgingteam. A free flow of information is encouraged for theimprovement of both judge and judged.

10 It shall be the owner sresponsibility to document the authenticity or correctness ofany feature of his/her vehicle to the satisfaction of the judgingteam. In the event of a dispute, the Head Judge and Deputiesare empowered to arbitrate a resolution. In the event that anauthenticity dispute arises over a matter as printed in thishandbook, the owner s documentation shall be provided to theHead Judge of the meet. The Head Judge will subsequentlypresent the documentation for possible modification of thishandbook to the Chief Judge of the BCA if warranted by theevidence. Acceptance (or denial) of the evidence for purposes ofthe meet shall not prejudice the review of such evidence byBCA, or its ultimate inclusion by alteration of this GUIDELINES FOR FAIRNESS AND CONSISTENCY IN JUDGINGA judging team should consist of a Team Captain, at leastone other judge and apprentices (optimum size for team isfour).
