1 Syllabus Spring 2017 Copyright Law Professor Harrison Welcome to Copyright . This is the tentative syllabus. In addition, I will lecture on materials that are not in the book. Book: Alfred C. Yin & Joseph P. Lui, Copyright Law, 3rd edition. Statutory Supplement (I have not assigned the official supplement but you need a copy of the 1976 Copyright Act) It is online and there should be many used copies available on Amazon. This course assumes you have had no prior exposure to Copyright law. The focus of the course is on the basics. A thorough examination of Copyright , including all the exceptions, special circumstances, and international implications would take at least a 6 credit course. I like to conduct the course at two levels. One level is the more or less conventional progression through the topics as your casebook authors have arranged them.

2 The other level involves the case of the day. Each day I attempt to bring in a case that is not in the book in an effort to expose you to the vast number of ways Copyright issues present themselves. In the regard, if you run across an interesting case please bring it to my attention so I can use it as the case of the day. Typically I will lecture but the lectures will assume you have read the material. This almost never works because at some point some students stop reading and then leave class unhappy because the lecture did not makes sense. Please, just read and let s avoid this problem. Your exam will be composed of 20 multiple choice questions in which you must explain your answer. These are comparable to short essay questions. It is open book/open note. Week 1 January 11. The first day of this week I will make some introductory comments and I want to talk you the elements of a Copyright case from beginning to end.
